I'm guessing with Kermit around, Beaker was convinced to go on with science rather than trying other hobbies (like working out).

As Mo Frackle basically said already, with Kermit around, Beaker ended up going into science and becoming what he is now. But if Kermit wasn't around, he would've instead have dedicated his time into trying to become bigger and muscular.
