Did you guys watch CBS News Sunday Morning yesterday? They aired a puppetry thing where the Muppets were mentioned briefly, and the main focus was "puppets for adults" programming like that new Team America movie and Avenue Q. Also Jane Nebel Henson made an appearance when they were talking about that new puppet theatre; she was the one who was speaking and then who cut the tape. I loved it myself. What are your thoughts on that story?

It's really sad. But actually taping something from TV and sharing it with others is also illegal. :frown: Just like copying a DVD.

Tape trades are not illlegal and if you're just giving a copy away that ain't illegal either. As long as you're not selling copies it's fine.

Well actually if I'm correct you can give your tape to someone else and they are allowed to make 1 copy themselves. You are not allowed to copy it for them. No matter if you get payed or not. That's irrelevant. I believe there is a rule about copying stuff for study purposes though.

If you want to split hairs, fine. Fact is, tape copying for friends has been going on since they were created. It will always go on. Same with DVD's, Video Games and music CD's. In the 70's my parents made tape copies of albums for friends as soon as tapes were changed from the 8-Track format. It's just not the same as the file sharing piracy thing, yes that is a problem especially with music. However with movie files they really are just too large to download unless you have access to a T1 connection at a $1000 a month. And then again, some file sharing is perfectly fine. For example, what about those impossible to find songs that the music stores can't order or that are out of print? Or a video clip that hasn't ever been released? But tape copying, no it just isn't an issue. I certainly am getting tired of all this politically correct stuff. People never used to complain about these things in the first place. People just seem to LOVE to complain these days just for the sake of it. I copy and trade stuff all the time for friends of mine, I also have my Mac set up so I can import video right from TV. People do it all the time over here in the States. If some people have a problem with it, tough, it's not going to change anything.

Let's get back to the topic!
I saw the piece. It was good, but not as infromative as I'd hoped it be. No mentions of Ronnie Burkette's amazing work, or the Center for Pupperty in Atlanta! Seems like they wanted to do a little something to mark Avenue Q's surprising run and the controversy of Team America. If they had dug a little deeper maybe we would have even go mention of Disney buying the Muppets and the film they are doing right now! But ANY puppetry on TV that isn't just for kids is enough to make my day!

I don't think that we'll ever get as comprehensive coverage as any of us would like to see. But its interesting to see that puppetry in general is (once again) receiving popular recognition. Let's hope it lasts, and that people won;t instantly relegate it to "kiddie" entertainment. I get so tired of explaining to people that my magic act, my juggling act, and my puppetry are not for kids. They're not strictly adult, mind you, but I do no performing that is targeted solely at children.

P.S. I taped the story.

 Hey guys - we're all friends here right? We can relax right?

...right?

Point of fact - in the United States and Canada you are legally entitled to record public broadcasts, largely because of the idea that the public "owns" the airwaves (subject to heavy government regulation of course...ugh). Practically speaking you can do pretty much whatever you like with the tape. Legally you're not really supposed to make additional copies but as someone already pointed out unless you're selling tapes you probably won't have a problem.

I have no idea what the EU rules are but I believe they are fairly different from North America.
