What people don't notice is that people are inherently greedy. Have you, for example, ever watched a small child at Christmas always wanting to know where their next present is? It's something all of us are born with, just wanting to look out for ourselves. It's part of being individuals, and that's why communism -- though good in theory -- doesn't work. It assumes that all people have the same goal and work ethic; but in reality some people can be hard working and some can be lazy, or some can be well suited for the jobs they're made to do, and others cannot. But since everyone gets the same amount of pay in communism, there's no incentive to work hard, so they don't.

The ones in the government at the top are the ones who benefit from the labor of civilians. There are always the greedy ones in the system, and in communism it's the elite in the government (not to mention those who slack off on the labor end of things -- laziness is a form of greed). For civilians it's a terrible system. I recommend reading "A Day in the Life of Ivan Dinesovich" by Alexander Sohlzenitzen (I know I screwed up the spelling in there somewhere :stick_out_tongue:). It vivdly descibes from first-hand observance what communist governments can do to their people. And who's ever heard of a wealthy communist country?

With capitalism, people are free to work at the paces and jobs that are right for them. Of course they're still going to be greedy, but the "greedier" they are, the harder they'll work. And that's good for the whole economy.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying greed is a good thing. I'm just saying that it's there, and capitalism (IMHO), harnesses it best -- not only for individual success, but for the success of a nation's economy.

This is not an endorsement for communism, but I have to disagree with you here. I know from the past two Christmas mornings that my daughter proves your theory wrong. Last year, she was almost in tears because there weren't any presents for me. She didn't want to open anything else, and even made me open her gifts so that I would have something too.

So as the next Christmas approached, she wrote a letter to Santa, and only asked for things for me... a blanket (cause mine ripped), a metal bowl (cause I had shattered my glass one when I knocked it off the counter while baking Christmas cookies), and a pair of socks (since she noticed that I had a pair with holes in them). Then, when she saw Santa, and he asked her what she wanted for Christmas, she told him, "Whatever you have in your bag!"

Christmas morning she was thrilled most that Santa had brought me gifts! Everything on her list was under the tree, along with a Telly plush. She just loved that Santa knew how much I like Telly. And when I offered for her to help me open my gifts, she said, no, she wanted to watch.

So anyway, I don't disagree that greed is a part of human nature, but I don't think we are born with it. I think it must be picked up along the way. And I am really glad that I got to learn that first-hand the way that I did.

Now I have to disagree with you. I believe it's human nature to be greedy, which is a case that we're born with. That's only my opinion though.

The difference here is that you have a wonderful child who actually cares about folks and one that other children should copy. You've obviously done something very right raising your child, honey child.

I was one of them greedy chilluns, as long as my friends or family could share in what I got, though.

Greed, being one of the seven deadly sins, is most certainly a *part* of human nature, but I am saying that I don't think we are necessarily *born* with it. I think that it is developed over time. Little kids, if they have been treated well, are usually somewhat benevolent with most things. I wasn't saying that she is unusual, just that I think we forget that most of us *start* off that way.

WRONG!

You can't have my opinion!!

Um--wait...

Unless we can share an opinion.

Okay, we'll do that.
