Oscar's New York accent

Did anyone ever notice that back when Sesame Street first premired, Oscar had somewhat of a New York accent? I think in the late 70's his voice started to phase into the way he sounds today. I wonder why Carroll didn't mention this in his book, and I wonder why he got rid of the accent. Did anyone else notice the accent he once had?

I've been listening to Muppet Central Radio a lot lately and concentrating on the voices, and I've noticed Oscar has a very definate accent. It's not typically like a Brooklyn accent, although he has that city vibe in his voice. I can't tell if it's more Cali or even South Jersey. Is there anyone who hears that or something else in his voice that might indicate he moved to Sesame Street from somewhere else?

I think, and I can't remember for sure because I haven't seen it for awhile, but I think in the Sesame Street Biography shown on A&E, Carroll Spinney says he got his inspiration for Oscar from a cab driver he had in New York City once. He said he tried this cab driver voice for Oscar and that Jim was like "that's perfect". I'm pretty sure that's how it went, but I could be wrong too, so don't be afraid to correct me!

I've noticed Oscar always sort of had a touch of a 'New York' accent. It's especially noticable on "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street."

Oscar has always had the New York accent. Also, Sesame Street is in New York, so he isn't from somewhere else.
