Did it ever explain in an early episode how Oscar changed from orange to green or did it just happen with no explanation?

Well I imagine anyone would change colors if they lived in a trash can!

Ha ha! No really, I have no idea.

I think you'll find the answer you're looking for in the Caroll Spinney book, particularly in the section about Oscar's appearance on the Flip Wilson show.

Other than that I can offer this totally bogus, fake, untrue explanation that I made up, which will probably be interpreted to some in the Internet world as the truth. Here goes:

Oscar's fur was always green from the get-go. During Woodstock in 1969, he had dyed it completely orange and stayed that way for all six months of Sesame Street's first season. When the show went into reruns, that was enough time for the green fur to grow out again and the orange fur to fall off or be cut off. So, when the second season began, there were his green fur.

(long pause)
Well, it could've happened that way.

There was probably no explanation.I believe it was just one of the muppet makeovers.Big Bird looked quite different in his first year too.He just had a long beak with no feathers on his head.Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy looked very different during season 1 of The Muppet Show. There was never any reference to their change of appearance by season 2.I think Oscar was just among the many muppet makeovers. :grouchy:  :embarrassed:

Here's one quote I found:

Oscar is still the original green puppet, though an earlier orange version was retired after the first season. How did Oscar explain the fact that he'd changed colors? He said he'd vacationed in Swamp Mushy Muddy. It was so damp there, he turned green overnight.

That would explain it a lot. Thanks for the answer JaniceFeSure. Yep, Oscar sure loves Swamp Mushy Muddy.

Yeah Carroll Spinney can claim that Oscar is the same original green muppet.

HOWEVER.

If you watch the 1970-1971 2nd season episodes, you will notice that Oscar, while green, is much fluffier than he would be in later years.

So there are three versions of Oscar (at least).....although Caroll does say that the Muppet principals undergo subtle makeovers every 3 or so years.

i think i read somewhere that he went from orange to green because of racial reasons. some people thought thought that having him orange meant that blacks or hispanics are grouchy. i dont know HOW someone could have thought that, but its stupider then the reason why they got rid of Roosevelt Franklin.
