Go to user cp at the top left of the page; edit options; scroll down to change avatar; choose the file that you saved on your hard drive and submit modifications.

Did you save the file to your hard drive first? You need to upload the file from your hard drive, not from the link Scott provided.

Could someone tell me how to go about saving my avatar to my hard drive? I feel so completely like an idiot for not knowing how!

With a Mac, you should just be able to drag and drop it onto your computer. Click on the picture, drag it to your desktop while holding down your mouse button. Hope that helps.

Don't be so hard on yourself, it took me a while to get used to your Mac. It's even worse when you use a Mac at home and a PC at work! I forget what I'm doing half the time.
