Wow I wish I could do that..That is an awesome model. I'm all for it in using CGI if a few of the scenes they want would be impossible for a puppeteer. I would love to see it with the actors or someone performing their puppet and they were doing the voice. I mean I love the cartoon Fraggles but it's just not the same without Jerry Nelson. If he can't perform the puppet anymore then at least let him do the voice. Back to the topic, I'm all for CGI just if they use it they need to blend it in well. For example some parts in Star Wars 3 looked like something you would see off of a video game. I'm for it as long as it is done well.

Nice computer graphics! Can you make one of Dr. Rainbrain? (What can I say? I'm madly in love with that dork!)

Nice work. When I read this thread I thought they were making the movie all CGI! Now, personally, CGI in addition to the puppetry would be pretty good, but I think the Fraggles should stay puppet, myself. I like CGI as much as most other forms of animation and all, but seriously.... the market is starting to get flooded with lousy CGI projects (like that stupid Bratz cartoon). Pixar is the king.

Oddly enough, I found it interresting you made Red, as Karen Prell works at Pixar.

Matt,

First, that's a great model! I'm in the early stages of developing an open source digital puppetry system, basically a way for anyone to perform "virtual puppets" using simple hardware like a data glove and game joystick. I know 3D (mostly 3DS but a little Maya too) but I'm not a good modller and one of the stumbling blocks stalling the project is lack of a decent, puppety model to work with.

Any chance you'd be willing to supply the model for this project? Obviously I wouldn't be able to include it with the public release of this software later in the year (because of the copyright issues) but it would be fun to play with until I get an original "digital puppet" built.

There's some info about the project (called the Panda Puppet System) in my Machin-X blog at the link below.

If anyone else is interested in helping with this too just let me know!

That art is great.

I prefer conventional puppetry to CGI. Something more life-like about real puppets and you can get better improvisation than you can from a scripted, CGI film. However, if it's a long-shot and you are showing the Fraggles walking along a sidewalk or a field in the movie, then CGI won't be bad because it won't be as noticeable I don't think. But, for upclose shots--nah. Puppets, please.

Wow Buck-Beaver, I didn't think my Fraggle model would really impress anyone. Thanks for the compliment.

As for your offer, I suppose it is possible to contribute to your project somehow. I really wish I was in a more flexible position to do that.

I have been out of animation work for almost 3 years. CG took over and pretty much antiquated my industry. My priority for the last few years has been to try and secure some kind of CG or animation or creative related job, so I don't know if my financial situation will allow me to work on much aside from that. But anything is possible! It could be fun.

Feel free to email me at beerbeastredux@yahoo.com. And thanks for the blog entry. It's the first time I or my work has ever been mentioned on one.
