My Chemical Romance breaks up

Yeah. They weren't exactly popular after the turn of the decade. They had some nice stuff, much better than some of the other crummy mainstream acts of the day. Didn't think they were even still around either.

I'm with you Dr. I didn't even know that they were still making music, but don't worry, in 20 years they'll be doing a "reunion tour" because that seems to be what ALL groups are doing now-in-days.

I know I'm late to the party, but...

It's too bad that they broke up, they were one of my favorite bands. They still make music, but do it solo or collaborate with other artists. MCR's singer also directed a new episode of The Aquabats: Super Show after they broke up.

I hate how they always seemed to be lumped into punk. I stopped telling people I listen to punk since people would always ask me "So you like MCR?" *facepalm*

They had some elements of hardcore punk in their music, but they never really were true "punk". Their last album was kinda on the punk side (pop-punk, actually), but also had some garage-rock revival and synths thrown in, the album didn't have that overproduced sound their previous LP had.

But when THAT'S the first band people think of when I say punk kinda grated my nerves. I know it sounds petty but.

I also don't believe that there is "true punk." Punk has multiple genres just like metal and rock. MCR is in there somewhere in one of those subgenres, I just hated that it was ALWAYS the first band people asked me if I liked.

I feel like I'm the only person who doesn't like them. I just don't like how they sound. I don't care what genre they are.

When I think of punk, I think Dead Kennedys and The Offspring, usually.

MCR really dislikes being called "emo", but their style does have elements of classic emo.

But in the end, it all comes down to you like it, or you don't like it. I happen to like it.
I'm just annoyed by people who dislike them, but don't even mention how they sound, they just mention their look.

I think of the Sex Pistols or The Ramones as Punk.

I definitely agree with the idea that rock has multiple sub-genres. My dad went on some speech last week trying to tell me that Queen wasn't a rock band because they didn't sound like Chuck Berry. I tried to tell him that rock was big enough for the both of them, but he didn't listen so I stopped trying.

On that subject, I hate how "Soft Rock" is considered a sub-genre of Rock. it doesn't sound like Rock, it has no characteristics of Rock. It barely sounds like Hair Metal Ballads in some cases... it's just not rock at all. Soft POP is a more fitting term. or rather Dentist Office Music.

Also don't get why John Denver is considered Rock (he was, but the only example I could think of was a Mad magazine poster from the 70's). He's not quite country or bluegrass, but he certainly wasn't rock.

I'd call that "art rock", being able to capably mix together different genres and styles without it sounding like they were just mashed together for no reason, but people equate "art rock" with progressive stuff like Yes and King Crimson. It's hard to mix genres together without sounding bad or completely ignorant in one of the styles; for an example, see every band not named Run-DMC that's tried to mix rap and rock.

Let's add Zebrahead to that short list of bands Except they are more Rap/Punk. His World is a totally amazing song and the Zebrahead version is definitely the best...I listen to too much Sonic music
