In the case of that song, Kevin Clash probably performed Hoots and recorded Elmo's voice later. Hoots was the more prominant character in the scene and had the solo lines.
I figured that, although I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin Clash did perform Elmo when the muppets were looking through the door (since Hoots wasn't in that shot). Although the song was pre-recorded, I have a feeling that the performers were performing the characters that were speaking when they were speaking. There are a lot of cuts in the segment, so Jim henson could have switched from performing Ernie to performing kermit when Kermit sang, for example.

That would be annoying to have to cut and edit a song like that. I don't think they make it that much harder on themselves.

How about in the Pick Your Pet, skit? Jim did Sonny Friendly, who later became Guy Smiley, and a bird. While Frank Oz did 4 characters. The girl contestant, a dog, Beautiful Day Monster, and the announcer.
Wait a minute. Sonny was performed by Richard Hunt and he came after Guy Smiley on the show. Are you saying the name 'Sonny Friendly' was originally used for Guy Smiley then later they made a different Muppet with that name? I'm confused.

That's right; in the "Pick Your Pet" sketch, Guy is named "Sonny Friendly".

In the book Sesame Street Unpaved, it mentions that Sonny friendly hosted the game show The crying game. Does anybody know if this was hosted by Guy Smiley when he was known as sonnny friendly or if it was the other character with the same name.

It had to have been the later one since it was a parody of the movie, "The Crying Game" that was made years after the original Sonny Friendly changed to Guy Smiley. I think the people who wrote the book, like most others, forgot that Guy Smiley was the originally Sonny Friendly and didn't even mention it.

yeah, it seems like this fact is so obscure that even the majority of us hardcore fans didn't know (untill now, at least) that guy Smiley was originally called Sonny Friendly. Do you think Sonny friendly was named after Guy Smileys original name or if it was just a coincidence? I wonder if Jim Henson knew that Guy Smiley was originally called Sonny friendly (at least in 1990, right before he died).

I'm sure they recycled the name out of the archives. They needed a name for a new game show host and went back to find one.

I have noticed that in Christmas Eve On Sesame Street, in most of the scenes where Big Bird and Oscar interracted, that when Big Bird speaks, we see a wide shot of both characters, but when Oscar speaks, the scene usually just cut to a close-up shot of oscar, so Caroll Spinney probably switched over to performing oscar in those scenes. I do know that there was at least one wide shot where oscar speaks and no scene cutting was done.

Big Bird and Oscar were also seen together in 4030 1/2(SS4DMM). But it was Matt Vogel who was performing the bird, and I dont know if Caroll was doing Oscar, but I read somewhere that John Tartaglia performed him.
