I wish I knew what my 'lucky charm' was so that I could set it aside sometimes. I can only write one story at a time, but I just keep thinking of new ones that distract me, and... yeah, that's why I haven't finished any posted fanfics in a couple of years now.
But back in the good old days, when I DID finish my stories, (that being the summer of 2005...) I spent a lot of time sitting outside with a pen and a notebook. I had a spot in the woods behind my house that was exceptionally good for writing, or at least for thinking about writing. Otherwise, long walks usually helped get the juices flowing...
And when all else failed, I mean, when I felt COMPLETELY stuck- it sounds ridiculous, but it worked for me- I put my hand in the air like there was really a Muppet on it, and waited for it to start talking.
Just in case it helps anyone else, I might as well also mention that I have a non-fanfiction story that I'm working on that has its own very specific "lucky charm." I can only write it at night in a mostly dark room (the darker the better, although it helps to have enough light to see), preferably sitting on the kitchen floor while continuously sucking on ice cubes. (Yes, I am insane. Insane A. Sylum. Nice to meet you.)
