Lord Chatterly and "Alphabet Chat"

I was just wondering. Does anyone remember this guy?

I seem to recall the "Alphabet Chat" segments, but can anyone remind me of how they went and who showed up on them, etc.? I've just recently noticed this guy show up on www.sesame-encyclopedia.com and I know I recognize him. I remember seeing him on Sesame Street as a child. Can anyone also tell me why for some reason looking at this guy freaks me out?

(Really- I don't know why- but I recall him being a little scary as a child and seeing the picture again is a little freaky.)

Well... Maybe because Mr. Chatterly wasn't rully used that much. He'd be seated in an armchair that'd turn around to face the audience at the beginning of the sketch, while the alphabet was sung in a Gregorian chant-like round.

He'd discuss the letter of the day, only four or five sketches for the letters B, H, O, and R were ever made though some say there was one for the letter L also.
He'd tippically start his chat with a soft quiet voice, but other AM's and miscellaneous animals would come out to interrupt him and he'd get rully annoyed.

I remember the Alphabet Chats during the brief time they were around. Poor Lord Chatterly. All he wanted was to have a nice calm chat with the viewers about the merits of various letters, and all **** would break loose, reducing the guy to tears.

I can't remember which letter was being mentioned, but during one skit Guy Smiley comes barging in and decides this would be a good time to shoot a dog food commercial. "Let's see if Fido will eat his Bow Wow Chow!" He even holds the bowl up to Chatterly "Want some?"

Maybe in another lifetime, Lord Chatterly will get his moment to shine again.

I remember one where he and some Anything Muppet Rabbits where talking about the lette 'H' I believe....

I remember in the early 90s, Mr. Chatterly came to Sesame Street and wanted to have Oscar's dog, Preposterous, on his show since Mr. Chatterly was going to talk about P and he wanted Preposterous the Puppy and his toy pickle to be featured. At first, Oscar refused, but then he finally gave in.

When Mr. Chatterly tried to get Preposterous to do some P things, all that the puppy did was yap and yawn and fall asleep. So Mr. Chatterly decided to talk about the letter Y instead since Preposterous yapped and yawned.

Ah, thanks for all the comments. The memories are starting to come back- Maybe it was the Gregorian chanting thing that got me a little scared- anyone else remember being freaked out by that guy?

I do seem to recall that Dog Food thing with Guy Smiley too.

the 1 with Guy smilely you're referring to was about the letter R, the others from the 70s included a show about the letter O and the letter L. and I could of sworn seeing 2 different L shows. they were simmaler with Cookie Monster walking by. 1 most maybe familiar with where be opens the window saying listen and realize a TV show was being taped and closes the window and runs away, but this other L one I reall he says something to Mr. Chatterly and he probably tell him I doing a TV show and as CM was closing the window he forgets to remove himself from the window and closes it on him.
