Small tight stitches and take your time. If you rush it, it will never turn out well. There are lots of websites with stitches and diagrams. Try a google search for whipstitch, baseball stitch, ladder stitch, and blanket stitch that should help with most puppetry sewing needs.

Onath is on the money... "take your time"! If you get to anxious and try to rush bad things will occur.
And don't get discouraged... Like any new skill it takes time to develop. While it may seem like a simple thing at first glance, there are little tricks to it you'll only learn by experience.

Here's a link to a great little free e-book that covers some of the basics, as well as has some great information on creating costumes for your puppets...

The basic sewing section covers the whipstitch, but it's definately worth the effort to research and learn the baseball stitch as well.

It's worth a read. Hope it helps.
