Always keep in mind your blue/green screen technology. You can shoot a puppet in full body view and not ever see the performer or anything.

I have read that the Elmo in Grouchland DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette. does anybody know whether that featurette includes information about how the chicken was performed?

Fraggle Rock characters:
The Gorgs are performed with two people performing each gorg: one performer is inside the suit, and the other operates a radio-controlled glove (called a "Waldo") which controlls the face movements. that performer does the voice.
I forgot to mention that the Gorgs have monitors inside their heads for the performers to see.

It's not exactly a "How did they do it" kind of featurette. It was little interviews with Patinkin, Williams, Elmo and the directors. Pretty much all it was.

It looks like Thog was performed the same way as Big Bird, with the performer using his right arm to work the head (and possible controll the eye movement) and his left arm to operate the left arm. i am not sure if the performer could switch his right arm from the head to the right arm. There was probably a monitor inside thog, and there was also probably a mechanic inside the character that could make the ears go up. I guess Thig was performed in a similar way.
The Muppet Morsels, for the episode with Harvey Korman, says that there is a monitor inside Thog. But also that the lighter fabric just below the mouth is where the performer can see out.
