Well, last week I created that secondary, emergency account "Colonel Hogan" here in case anything happens to my regular "D'Snowth" account here, but I have a confession to make: I've NEVER seen an episode of Hogan's Heroes! NEVER! I know that a very young, clean-shaven Richard Dawson is part of the cast, and that it's a sitcom that takes place during a war.

Actually, all I've actually seen relating to Hogan's Heroes is an old commercial the cast and Carol Channing did in the 1960s for Jell-O as it's been posted twice on YouTube (hey, ever COMMERCIALS had laugh tracks back then)!

My parents have introduced me to a lot of these classic sitcoms that I've grown to love, and my dad has been trying to get me to watch the show for the longest time, even trying to convince me that it's "better than M*A*S*H"; that I find hard to believe because, like all of you know, M*A*S*H is my favorite show. BUT, I know quite a few people who are fond of Hogan's Heroes as well.

So, should I check this show out? Is it worthy of my attention? If I love classic sitcoms like I do, would I love this show too? Is it sitcomy enough to deserve the laugh track? Does the way my dad compares M*A*S*H to it seem similar to that whole Bewitched Vs. I Dream of Jeannie thing? Did they even HAVE Jell-O during WWII? If they're all American, why is Richard Dawson speaking with an Australian accent, and that chef dude speaking with a French accent? Do you want me to shut up now? Did you know that I once had thirteen bottles of Snapple Apple in the fridge? Do you want me to shut up now? Hey... what are you going to do with that anvil?

Well, I can't compare Hogan to M*A*S*H, because I've never actually watched M*A*S*H*. But Hogan is a quality show, and Bob Crane was an excellent leading man/comedian.

Richard Dawson played British Corporal Peter Newkirk (he wasn't Australian). In fact, Dawson was born in England.

The basic premise of the show is about a bunch of POWs in WWII who try to outfox and outwit their Nazi captors, led by the resourceful Colonel Hogan (Bob Crane). Hogan's chief nemesis is Colonel Wilhelm Klink (Werner Klemperer), who is often foiled by Hogan and his men. Klink's classic catchphrase is "Hoooo-gaaaaan!" whenever Hogan spoils one of Klink's plots. One of Klemperer's last TV roles was as Klink on an episode of The Simpsons, as an angel who shows Homer what life would be like if he hadn't married Marge. He even cries "Hooooo-meeeer!" at one point.

Interestingly, although he played a German, Klemperer was actually Jewish. He was a man of many talents, and was an accomplished violinist.

The other regulars included John Banner as Sgt. Schultz, Robert Clary as Corporal LeBeau, Larry Hovis as Sergeant Carter, Ivan Dixon as Kinchloe and Sigrid Valdis (a.k.a. Patty Olson) as Hilda, Klink's secretary. Crane and Valdis fell in love and were married on the Hogan's set.

The subject matter may sound grim, but the show was (and continues to be) popular during its original run and in syndication. The bad guys are portrayed as bumbling fools, while Hogan and his men are presented as clever and resourceful.

The series is available on DVD, so you may want to check it out.

Heh, funny, his accent sounded more Aussie-like to me. I don't know, it's hard to explain verbally, but there seems to like a slight difference in the sounds of a British accent, and an Australian accent, and I thought his sounded Australian (kind of like how people up in the Northern states have a "yankee accent", and us Southern people have like a "country accent".)

You'll probably enjoy Hogan's Heroes, Snowth, especially if you're a fan of classic TV from the 60s and 70s.

F Troop is another classic show I never saw, although I believe it was once part of Nick at Nite's lineup, when they were showing stuff like Mr. Ed and The Donna Reed Show.

Then I'll definitely check it out then, especially since I'm already a fan of Richard Dawson!

Hey, is it just me, or does Commandant Klink seem to resemble Fearless Leader from Rocky and Bullwinkle? Particularly in the live action movie where Robert DeNiro played the part?

Never got a chance to see it, but I heard it was pretty good. I know it on ABC Family now, right?

Oh yeah1 I heard that they removed it for the schedule a while back. Thank for reminding me! And to think that they made this big hoopla about how it was going to be on their network, too! Oh well I guess. That the price you say.:smirk:
