SS Muppets are known for their very distinct and affecionate(and sometimes bizzare) personalities. Which are the best? Here are mine:

5. Herry Monster -
He's super strong I always found that quite cool, espicially when he picked up that rock to make room for the garden on Sesame St. !

4. Oscar the Grouch -
The guy loves trash! What more can I say? Lol.

3. Ernie -
Ernie has to be the most humorous of the bunch. He's always playing jokes, espicially on "you know who". But hey, what's wrong with a guy wanting to have a little fun? Ernie, in my opinion, also sings some of the shows most memorable songs, my favorite being "I Don't Want to Live On the Moon". It really showed a more serious tone to him.

2. Grover -
Grover used to make me laugh a lot as a child, I really enjoyed the waiter Grover sketches the most. Lol, I always found it strange that he had all these different jobs, yet, in certain books, he was seen as an innocent kid who only wanted his mommy. So how old IS this guy?

1. Telly Monster -
He is a great character, and it's always entertaining when Telly is in a scene. Definately underrated.

Honarable Mentions

Cookie Monster -
COOOOKIEEE! AH NUM NUM NUM!
Lol what's more funny than a cookie eating monster who acts like he's addicted to...ya know, 'stuff'.
They even tried an intervention with him, LOL.
j/k
He's definately a riot. I really like the Monsterpiece Theater skits the most, espicially 39 stairs, one of my memorable favs.

Big Bird -
He has seen A LOT go down on the street - from hurricanes, to weddings, and even the passing of a beloved friend, that's a lot for a six year -old (even a bird in that case) to handle.Whether he's sad, mad, dissapointed, or even cheerful and happy, he's not afraid to express his feelings.

Elmo -
Ummm...he's good OUTSIDE of Sesame Street. That's all...

I always thought The Count had an upbeat personality he is almost always happy as long as there is something to Count.

I always wished we saw the same quality of Elmo performance for Hollywood Squares, Scrubs and Bonnie Hunt. There are times when Kevin's slyness pops through and the character can have some pretty good moments... but it's hard to see a personality when you're talking about birthday cakes and the hundreds of things they can't do over and over...

Ernie and Bert- They define "Odd Couple". Bert is a little like an older sibling, being easily annoyed by the younger sibling, but still manages to have fun even though he's hesitant at first. Ernie is like the little sibling that always wants to play a game even though Bert doesn't want to, but Ernie always seems to have fun annoying Bert, but he still respects him as his friend.

Big Bird- He's everyone's friend and child. He's naturally curious about everything and his friends always explain things to him in a way that he can easily understand.

Oscar- Resident grouch. At least he shows he cares at some occasions, when Maria was giving birth to Gabi, when Big Bird went missing in "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street". At least there's a soft spot somewhere inside that grouch.

Cookie Monster- Loves cookies, but also healthy foods. Always in moderation.

Grover- Comedian of the cast. Always wanting to please and always receiving a laugh out of everything he does.

The Count- Loves to count, but seems to annoy others easily whenever he counts something and drives them nuts, but everyone learns to tolerate the counting to a point.

I think that Oscar's grouchiness :grouchy: is a great personality. He is supposed to teach kids about positive and negative attaitudes.

Oscar is such a complex character... he seems to be all about being the pre-requsite "grump"... Mr. Grumpy, Grouchy Smurf, Grumpy the Dwarf... stuff like that. But he has such complexity outside of that. And unlike most SS characters, you actually got to see him age and evolve in such different ways...

In the 70's he was basically the contradictarian. He contradicted people to keep him in his grouchy mood. He hated singing, he hated the sunshine... and everything he loved was the opposite of what everyone else love. In the 80's, you see him actually become something more... a foil... a prankster... reluctant friends with Telly (I swear some of the best Oscar bits were when he had Telly to play off of). But then we also saw Slimey. We saw the deep down sweetness come out of the character through Slimey. Why, Slimey wasn't just his pet. Oscar treated him like a son. Even with Grundgetta he doesn't express that kind of love. Sure, you knew he loved everyone on the street and cared for them (that sequence in Christmas Eve on SS where he was worried about Big Bird, and feeling terrible for what he did earlier still brings up tears)... but he never ever said a bad thing to Slimey, let alone give him a grouchy look.

Nowadays, he still has those qualities... but he seems to be a grumpy grandfather figure for the younger characters, like Elmo... we saw him effectively age from a grouchy adult to a grouchy old man in 40 years of the show's history. Now that's just a lot more complex than the original idea of a messy looking thing popping out and saying "Go Away!" every so often.

I realized that Ernie is acting silly is because to make Bert feel angry. When he sang I Don't Want to Live on the Moon he acted honest and serious.

I really like the chemistry between Ernie and Bert. Ernie's light-hearted and fun, someone who you could act silly around. And I love the way he stirs up Bert, because Bert's an easy target, and a pretty conservative guy. But he's also a great character: independant and keeps to himself, but also gets his rocks off the "dull" things such as pigeons and see's the beauty in something as average as bottle-tops. I actually have a friend who reminds me of Bert... So I guess I'm kind of The Ernie out of the two of us, but I can relate to both characters.

Big Bird's personality plays a significant role in the show: He's got a lovely nature, he's so innocent. kids can relate to him. When I watch SSt now as a teen, I still can relate to him in subtle ways.

Oscar's great. I agree with everything Dr. Tooth said above, as the show changes through the years you are able to see his character devalop. He's definately a prankster, and I even know people in everyday who will act grouchy just to get a reaction from somebody. He and Telly were great together, Telly... that's another great personality, right there. Too bad they don't hang out as much as they used to.

Two words: The Count.

I think besides Grover & Ernie & Bert and all the other characters, the count beats them all. Who knew that being a person like him would be so much fun?

I love the Oscar/Telly dynamic. I will probably take some heat for this by those who don't like anything Elmo - but i also really like the times when Elmo/Oscar get paired. They're a great contrast in personalities - Elmo's over sweetness mixed with Oscar's over sourness - the irresistable force meets the immovable object!

I thought it was a smart idea if SW was going to make a movie with Elmo as the central figure to mix it up with Grouchland. Seeing Elmo in that atmosphere mixed it up and kept it balanced. The grouches kept Elmo from causing harm to the diabetics in the audience while Elmo's ability to be bewildered and entertained by the Grouch's outlooks kept Grouchland from being too dark.

Oscar's fun to see annoyed and who better to annoy him than The Most Annoying Muppet? Likewise Oscar's the one who can tell it like it is and throw snarky remarks Elmo's direction. On at least two occasions, Oscar's even referred to Elmo by the same term Elmo's non-fans typically use, "The Little Red Menace". Regardless of how one feels about Elmo, ya gotta love that!
