Favorite show no one knows

I watched Big Blue Marble, Vegetable Soup & New Zoo Review

Ah, New Zoo Revue. The BANE of my existence as a Sesame Street fan. I try very hard not to rag on anyone's favorite show (cuz the stuff I like is pretty out there and stuff that only someone like me could even like), but I feel that I have to in this case.

The show somehow appears ever so often on a home shopping channel (at least until it became something else after the DTV switch) to fill out the FCC lipservice requirement (3 hours of quantity kid's educational programming is to be aired in a week. Even if it's old nature shows at 5 am Sunday Morning).

Now, this is what I hate about the show:

The costumes are ugly
the songs seem like they're written by someone who can't write music or lyrics to save their life
The Owl's constant misogynistic unfunny comments being the "Humor" on the show
That little orange Cookie Monster looking thing (where were CTW's lawyers at the time)
And in no freaking way should an old, craggly, stubby mound of ambiguous muscle/fat be named Mrs. Goodbody.

I agree with you on what you have stated, though the show lacked an attractive appearance, the purpose of the show(through my young eyes), were the lessons that the show tried to teach; such as: friendship, patience, etc..and that is why I watched it.

I can't blame it for trying to bring in morals and teaching good values... just the way they did it.

There are 2 kinds of Kids shows I absolutely detest, again as a Sesame Street Fan... ones that talk extremely down to kids like they're all idiots (Barney, Dora, Teletunnies...etc.) and those cheap obviously trying to cash in off of Sesame Street type shows you'd likely see on public access TV or The Learning Channels in the early 90's. NZR reminds me of the latter. I actually tried to watch the show to make fun of it, but I just didn't even think it had a fun campiness, you know, like a bad B movie or Clutch Cargo.

It seems that the show would have had the potential to be good... that is, if they had good music, good acting, good costumes (I wonder how many kids had nightmares brought on by the Hippo... I saw it dance once, and I still haven't been able to recover from it... eek!).

Honestly, the costumes (I shudder to call them puppets) wouldn't have been so bad if they didn't have those googly eyes. Half the time, the pupils aren't even visable when they're at an angle.

I'd like to thank The Count for letting me know it's MANX MOUSE, not manx cat! Now I have seen it on youtube! Prior to that, I thought I'd never see it again...what a difference one word makes!

I agree with Drtooth, and actually Sesame Street's writing isn't what it used to be. and I feel the talking down style has been incorporated into it a bit. I'm not trashing it, but it's not as strong as it was, clearly. If the skits were funny like the old days I'd check it out more. And I know I'm not who it's aimed for anymore, but the fact remains that a trailblazer of a show has been influenced by some of the traits of much lesser shows for a while now.

Okay... which one of you cats mentioned Mysterious Cities of Gold? I forgot to mention, there's going to be a new MCOD cartoon series coming up the info, unfortunately is in French and there's a blurb about it on the Wikipedia article (which ISN'T in French)

I don't know if this is going to come to the US or not (most likely not) but I figured I might as well mention it.

Out of curiosity, I looked up New Zoo Revue and saw that it featured Sharon Baird as one of the puppet performers... so THAT'S why she was used less frequently during the 70s on Krofft shows, because before then, she was on just about all of their shows from H.R. Pufnstuf, The Bugaloos and Lidsville.
