Chapter Ten
John had usually taken to walking around the caverns to clear his head. He was one of the most revered and feared fraggles in Fraggle Rock. But that came with a price. No one could know that he was a wembler, yet it helped him. Ambling along the pathways, he found himself going farther then he had ever gone before. Well, as he remembered at least. He saw a cavern up ahead that seemed to sparkle and glitter with an otherworldly presense. He wembled to himself for nearly ten minutes, until he finally decided he would see what it was.
"Is anyone in these caverns?" He called out, becoming more afraid as his own voice echoed back upon him. "Hello??"
"Helllooooo....." Was the etheral sounding echo. The only other voice present he figured. So he trundled on ahead.
When he came to the middle of the caverns he saw what the glitter was coming from. The Night and Day Lilies. The tokens of love of Fraggledom. More love then a rollie ever was, but still a simple token of everlasting love to one another. He knelt down in front of a patch of the lilies and he plucked one of the day lilies carefully. A soft spray of pollen gushed forth into his face. He remembered the scent well. A soft, heady scent; evoking strong memories in the poor, bedraggled convincer.
"Oh John....I can't believe it. You...you picked this....for me?" A young fraggle replied happily, to her deeply-blushing friend.
"Yes, Glenda. I...I got it for you." He nodded, as if affirming what he said even more. Glenda clutched the beautiful day lily to her chest, and sighed; the strong scent wafting up to her nose.
Smiling, she leaned in towards John and gave him a deep kiss. He almost fainted, but she caught him tightly in her strong grip. "I still can't believe such a feeble fraggle like yourself would want anything to do with me." She sighed softly, still smiling. "Most of the boys are scared of me. They don't like being challenged."
"I love you just the way you are Glenda. I mean, you're the strongest of the firefighters! You've helped us many times you know that..." He gently wrapped his arms around her, as she was nearly twice his strength. "You're just perfect for me, Glenda. Don't ever change, you hear me? Please...don't ever change."
She smirked, and ran her strong hand through his black, bushy hair. "No matter what you say, Mr. Convincer?"
He nodded exurbantly. "No matter what I or anyone else says, Glenda. Never change."
"Alright then, John. I promise, I'll never change." With that, she hugged him tightly; not enough to hurt him, but enough so he could definately feel it.
Glenda was a strange fraggle...years of working as a Volunteer Firefighter and Cavern Excaveator had made her strong, and slightly muscular. She was not like the other female fraggles; who loved to play and dance all day long. Now, don't get me wrong; she loved that as much as the next Fraggle...but instead of only working 30 minutes a week...she worked 30 minutes every day. Alternating days of working with the firefighters, and other days of working in the caverns. She didn't map them...she opened them up. With her hammer and pick-axe. It was hard work; but she enjoyed it. Many of the females wouldn't have anything to do with her, and the males normally were fearful of her. She was almost as tall as Large Marvin was wide; and she could protect her friends...what few she had....if the chance ever arose.
It was said that once she tripped up Pa Gorg so Patinka; little Mokey's mother, could get the radishes they so sorely needed. Many didn't believe it, but Patinka always was happy that Glenda helped her get radishes. She was the sort-of bodyguard for the radish picker, and they never had any trouble from the Gorgs; so long as Glenda was around.
But how a short, feeble-appearing, bucktoothed fraggle would want to marry her was strange in anyone's mind. She could crush him like a poison cackler, they all said. But she was gentle and careful around John. She never wanted to hurt her love, and he never tried to convince her or anyone else of anything they never wanted to do. If she objected, he let her. He never abused his power around her or towards her; or even towards any other fraggle in Fraggle Rock.
That was their vows. And they always had kept them...up until her unfortunate death.
His memories ended on quite a sad note, and he was vaulted back towards reality. Looking down he noticed, he had crushed the beautiful day lily in his hands. He never wore his ring after it had happened. He always kept it in the breast pocket of his jacket, close to his heart.
It always stayed near him, but he could never wear it again. He was too painful, those memories; good and bad were permantly attached to that acursed yet beloved ring. A smooth, simple band of silver. He remembered that her's had a beautiful small chunk of a rainbow rock inset into it. He stayed where he was, crying until he passed out from exhaustion.
-~- Sorry for the long time in posting a new chapter! I promise I will try to keep up on a somewhat-regular basis guys! Enjoy!! -~-
