Yes, exactly - my glasses have saved my eyes countless times from all sorts of stuff - splashing bleach, exploding car battery acid, flying woodchips and splinters, metal shavings. The best thing glasses ever did for me was during an accident I had in which my face met road pavement at 55 mph and skidded along for about 50 feet, driving my glasses into my left eye socket and totally mashing the left side of my face - BUT - I would have lost my eye had the lens not been right over it all the way.

What shiners though, lol. Yes, black eyes really are black.
