I mean, It's not the shows having WS that makes me angry.. it's the commercials...

I mean, I agree with what you say about how it's for syndication, and it's so much better and all... but I still theink Boston Public is rediculously melodramatic...

Bet on the series finalie, everyone commits suicide and a Shakesperian chorus would start saying an epilogue!

Who said anything about syndication? I didn't. But why would commericals being in wide screen bother you. They will have to be like that in a few years anyway, and some companys are getting a jump on it. I think its a good thing, and exciting.

It's a trend... like how commercials are all featuring miserable looking people in their 20's in faded color. I hate commercial copy cats!

Was wondering when you 'd catch that.
Only when it is easy and the joke is sadly obvious.

In a script I was working on once for the puppets, Muley, Buford the Dog, and Roy Duck are running from bad guys and jump in a drainage ditch.

Muley: DUCK!
Roy: (Pops up looking in the air) Mom?

Actually, my parents hate widescreen, so I can maybe help to articulate some of the arguments against it. First of all, while you're getting more of the picture, it has to be made SMALLER to get the whole image on the screen. Widescreen HDTVs are not the norm yet, so we have to deal with a shrunken image. And it's hard for some to make that sacrifice when very little important information is usually lost. The scene in Treasure Planet, ironically, is a perfect example. Both of the characters talking are still in the screen; the stuff in the background is, well, just background. And while it's useful for movies to have their original dimensions when shown on TV, my parents feel that widescreen on TV shows themselves is just a way of jumping on the latest stylistic bandwagon.

Mind you, I don't completely agree with these views. I'm the kind of person who wants to see EVERYTHING. I just wanted to help make clear that people who are against it aren't necessarily crazy or stupid.

Personally, if a TV show is shot in widescreen now, it should simply be planning for the future. I don't mind if they make it widescreen only for those who have widescreen TVs. Then, when widescreen TV is common, we'll all get the full image. If they had wanted to keep Farscape Season 4 in the fullscreen dimensions for most viewers, then provide WS format for those with WS television sets, and offer it in WS on the DVD, I wouldn't have minded a bit.

BTW, a good case for the need for widescreen can be found in "The Sound of Music," especially during the "So-Do-Me-La" number. Robert Wise (the director) used the full canvas of the screen to glorious effect here. Interestingly, NBC hit on a compromise when broadcasting this movie in recent years: they'd show the numbers/scenes that really needed WS in that format, then go to commercial and come back in fullscreen.

Anyway, this argument will all become moot in about 10 years or so when we all have widescreen TVs. Then we can complain about those annoying black bars on the sides of our screens for old TV shows.

Okay, that was good. You've earned your "Wocka Wocka!!" pin for the day.
