Bedtime Stories And Songs
From Season 1 or 2: It's nighttime, and for some reason Big Bird promises to wake Susan at 8:00 a.m. BB has, alongside his nest, a unique alarm clock that chimes the hour with "ding" strikes. However, Big Bird wakes Susan at least twice in the wee hours of the morning because he didn't count the "dings" properly. A frustrated Susan, drawn out on the street in a nightgown/bathrobe, patiently explains to BB to wake her when the clock goes "ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding-ding" (she counted on her fingers) Eventually he wakes her at the right time. BB's means of waking her consisted of an abstract sound akin to his snoring -- think of "gwubba-gwebba-GWUBBA-GWEBBA" -- followed by a loud "SUUUUUUU-SAN!"
From a few years later: The adults send Big Bird off to bed, in anticipation of a picnic at 8:00 the next morning. After BB is alone in the playground/nest area, he is frustrated about getting to sleep in the noisy outside environment.
- First BB is worried a firetruck will wake him. The scene returns with a couple dozen buckets of water (to prevent fires, thus precluding the need for a fire engine run) placed around the playground entrance.
- Next BB is worried that a travelling salesman will wake him, specifically the noise made when he drops his heavy sample briefcase. The scene returns with lots of pillows on the sidewalk.
- Next he is worried about other things, like a fruit vendor who yells "strawberRIEEEES!" (off-key), or a neighbor boy who practices his trumpet at 4am. The scene returns with a sign reading "NO FRUIT TODAY" plus many other placards reading other things, tacked up along the wall outside the playground.
- Finally BB sets his alarm clock, then thinks it won't make enough noise to wake him. "And what if it forgets to go off." The scene returns with all manner of new and antique clocks around his nest. Then BB goes to bed. A few minutes later all the clocks strike 8... (he was up all night doing this stuff). The adults quickly show up to take him to the picnic, but BB is groggy, walking and snoring at the same time, uttering an occasional "picnic" in his sleep.
"Quiet Time"I remember a classic episode during the late 70's where Big Bird had a hard time falling asleep. Bert comes in and suggests he march to sleep. Bert turns on a tape recorder and a marching song plays and tells Big Bird to get up and march. Big Bird does that and marches around the room while Bert's having a great time. Then Big Bird starts to get sleepy and tries to go back to his nest. But Bert wouldn't let him and keeps him marching. Big Bird has no choice but to leave his room. Bert was too busy marching to notice that Big Bird was out sleeping in the street.
