I do believe he said that the character didn't have that name at the time, but I'm pretty sure he talked about the voice. Does anybody else who was there (Naperville) remember this?
I read an article about the BAM event where, after a screning of follow that bird, Caroll Spinney took questions from fans, and when asked about elmo, he said that the elmo puppet first appeared in either the second or third season, and was called baby monster. he also said that he performed baby Monster. although he talked about elmos days as baby monster in his book, he didn't mention performing him in the book.

Yeah, I remember seeing a bit with Caroll's Lefty (I believe he was selling Ernie a U), he kinda sounded like a whispery Oscar without the "Grouchiness" to it.

I find that hard to believe. I believe there was only 3 people who performed Elmo. Brian Muehl, Richard Hunt, and of course Kevin Clash. Now Carroll may have performed him when he was a background anything muppet monster, but I don't think he ever did a voice for him.
I love Richard Hunts Elmo voice.

there must have been precious few of these...he only performed him for one year (1984), and begrudgingly at that. do you know of any skits/songs Hunt did as Elmo?
