He also mentioned at the booksigning that he was the first Elmo...
If that's true, then I would think they overdubbed his voice with Kevin's on that song "We're All Monsters" after Elmo became a cast regular.

This is true, but that wasn't Carroll's Elmo - Brian Muehl did that one: See http://forum.muppetcentral.com/showpost.php?p=64045&postcount=23

Other than the lack of first person, anybody know how to identify which of the three Elmos is which?

Coincidentally, Elmo's been around - a friend of mine who auditioned for that scene in "Muppets Take Manhattan" said that they were using the Elmo puppet to audition people with.

I could be wrong, but I think Carroll Spinney also did Prairie Dawn,Farley and Jerry of Jerry & The Monotones.
I think he was one of the Monotones, the tall Orange AM, in "Mad".

If you are reffering to Rockin' Richard, you're wrong. Rockin' Richard was voiced by Richard Hunt. Coincidence in their names?

I find that hard to believe. I believe there was only 3 people who performed Elmo. Brian Muehl, Richard Hunt, and of course Kevin Clash. Now Carroll may have performed him when he was a background anything muppet monster, but I don't think he ever did a voice for him.

I do believe he said that the character didn't have that name at the time, but I'm pretty sure he talked about the voice. Does anybody else who was there (Naperville) remember this?

can anybody tell me if caroll spinney performed the following characters:

*the mother and/ or the to brothers from "Five people in my Family"? I can't identify the voice of the mother with any other performer, and considering how seldom caroll spinney did other voices, this should be easy (him doing a voice nobody can identify). and the brothers both sounded like younger versions of big bird. I have read the performer credits for the first sesame street album, featuring this song, and theonly performers credited were Jim henson and Frank Oz, but i think I could tell if they performed her. It could have been Lorretta Long, since the human actors have occasionally performed muppet voices, but she isn't credited on the "Jim Henson: a Sesame Street celebration" album, which also features this song.

*the queen from "The tale of Tom tattertall Tuttletutt". I have this on the "Sing the alphabet" album, and I can recognize all of the voices for the other performers (of course, I think that most of fran brills characters sound like either prarie dawn or zoe, but this voice kinda sounded like a male doing a womans voice... it actually sounded like it could have been dave goelz).

*either of the back-up singers in Mahna Mahna (or did frank oz double-track his voices in the sesame street version, like he did in the muppet show version?)

I also heard Carroll voice the sensitive kid with glasses in "Everyone Likes Ice Cream."

Heehee, yeah, the Monotones' names are all the actual performers names, which is kind of fun. When I first heard the song "Four", I almost died of shock when they all sang about their names. I had recognised Jerry Nelson as the main voice, then I heard, "Jerry's number one, he has lots of fun.." It surprised me. That was fun. :sing:

When the Muppets did their rendition of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine", it sounded to me like Spinney sings the second verse that begins "So we sailed, up to the sun...". Jerry Nelson did the first verse, and it sounds like Frank Oz sang from "And we lived beneath the waves", though his voice sounds kind of thin there.
