Chapter 13
Uncle Deadly returned theater but first appeared in the storage area under the stage where he had sent Robin and Amber. He found them in the process of looking for a way out.
“It would be in your best interest to stay here.”
Robin and Amber jumped at the sound of Uncle Deadly’s voice. The spun around to challenge him. Neither one liked the thought of being left out when their friends were in need. After all, they were a part of the group too.
“It has become too dangerous for you all out there. Once things have been resolved I will come to get you.”
“But we want to help,” Robin cried as Uncle Deadly vanished once more.
“Well, it looks like we are stuck,” Amber said quietly.
“And you still have a tendency to give up a little too easily,” Robin said, starting to push on one of the sets beside him. “We are going up there to help. I don’t care how mad Uncle Kermit gets at me.”

Scooter, Rowlf and Gonzo burst onto the stage to save their friends as Carrie, Jennifer, Rizzo, Miss Piggy, and Clifford came in at the top of the theater from the lobby. Uncle Deadly waited for his chance to swoop down on the action from the box.
“Let him go!” Fozzie was exclaiming.
Percival had Kermit against his body and a gun to his head. Everyone stopped in their tracks.
“It doesn’t have to be like this Mr. Waldenburg. Put down the gun and we can talk this through,” Kermit was saying.
“You will not do this to me. You will not ruin my career by going on the air.”
Gonzo began to slowly work his way off stage and closer to Percival.
“How will moi being back with her adoring fans, ruin your career? It is people like you who have ruined mine!”
Percival looked around him for the first time since grabbing Kermit. He was shocked to discover how many had arrived. He started to shake, unsure of what his plan was now. There was no way he’d be able to shoot everyone. Before, when he could dispose of the frog and the bear, he knew that he had a way out. He knew that the show would not go on.
“What is with you all?” He screamed disgusted. “Why are you always together?”
Percival grabbed Kermit tighter as he shook and backed up trying to get away from the group advancing in front of him.
“Because we care about and love each other Perc,” Jennifer spoke up. “It’s something that you had precious little of in your life.”
His eyes widened as he tripped backwards over Gonzo, sending Kermit flying and crashing to the floor. The gun landed with a thud and slipped under the seats. Uncle Deadly jumped from the balcony and landed on top of him. Quickly the Muppets tied him up and sat him in a seat.
They turned to look at their leader as Amber and Robin burst onto the stage.
“Kermie, are you okay?” Miss Piggy asked running to him.
“Ah, man. I we always miss out on the fun,” Robin whined.
“And you were told to stay put until I came for you.”
“Gonzo, how do you feel?” Rizzo asked.
“Oh, that was great but I’m kind of disappointed that he didn’t land on me.”
“Jennifer, honey. Would you like to tell us how you know Mr. Waldenburg?” Carrie asked, calling the groups’ attention to her as Jennifer stood in front of Percival whispering to him.
“I’m very disappointed in you,” Jennifer said to Percival for the rest of the group to hear, “You promised me that if you ever had the way, you would help me. All you did was let me down.”
“Jennifer, it’s been a long time since high school. I made that promise before I knew what they had done to my grandfather. I made the promise before I knew how horrible they were,” he finished and the tried to spit on Rizzo in desperation to show his loathing.
“Mom,” Amber screamed, “You know this horrible person! But he’s one of the reasons our friends have had to hide for so long.”
“I am aware of that. Now I want to know why. He promised me in high school that when he took over his fathers place at the network he would help to bring the Muppets back,” she turned her attention back to Percival, “You haven’t answered my letters and you haven’t kept your promise. What could they have possibly done that was that bad?”
“Their success kept my grandfather’s characters out of the business. Their success made my family cold. After the Muppets took center stage no one wanted to give the Waldenburg Wackies the chance. Not even their despicable founder Jim Henson.”
“Don’t you speak of Jim that way!” Rowlf said in a rare display of anger. “He was a kind and generous. I’m sure that if your grandfather had tried to contact him Jim would have given him the chance.”
“It doesn’t matter because the public wouldn’t give him the chance. There is no way that I’m going to let you take the chance away from me. If any type of variety group is going to make it in today’s society, it’s going to be the Wackies. Now untie me and let me go.”
Scooter decided it was his turn to speak, “Mr. Waldenburg, nobody is going to like them if you make them watch and that is what it sounds like you’re trying to do.”
“That’s right,” Clifford chimed in, “if you’re just going to keep us off the air to put your Wackies on and dictate to the audience that that is what they will watch from now on like you’ve done with your other shows, no one will like them.”
“If you all stay on the air, no one will watch.”
“I’ll make a deal with you Percival,” Kermit said. “If you do not interfere with us anymore, we will not show anything new when the Wackies come on air. Let us be and the public will get the chance to decide for themselves who they like. Just let us go on air tomorrow to pave the way for the public to see what they have been missing.”
The fight seemed to leave Percival’s eyes at that point and he took a resigned sigh.
“I want to ask you one more question,” Jennifer started, “If this is the truth and the laws have been changed for five years allowing us to have our freedoms again, than why haven’t you put the Wackies in business yet? Why haven’t you given the public something new and fun to watch?”
“Because I have been scared that no one would watch. My child doesn’t even know what a song is. I wanted the public to start performing on their own, then I would be able to rush in and give them what they wanted. Then rumors about the Muppets coming back started to surface and everyone was calling the station asking for them. Grandparents were telling their grandchildren what they had grown up with. I had to stop you before you became to big again.”
Kermit walked over and untied him.
“Mr. Waldenburg, let us go on air tomorrow and we will not show or do anything new when you put the Wackies on air.”
Percival nodded and turned to slowly walk out of the theater. He turned at the door to the lobby.
“Keep your end of the bargain, frog, or I will put you all out of business. After all, I have all of the networks in the palm of my hand,” he said, trying to muster up the anger needed in his voice to save face.
“Now,” Kermit said when he heard the entrance door shut, “Let’s go home and get some sleep or else we’ll never be ready for the show.”
