I like the concept behind China, IL in that college is more or less a grown-up version of high school, and the Flash animation at least looks real fluid courtesy of Titmouse. But yeah, it's a pretty unremarkable show with a lot of tired shock value, though not the worst adult show I've seen.
I like the animation, just not the artwork. Rick and Morty manages to give that rough, doodle-y look while looking professional. The animation makes the visuals of China, Il palatable, but the muted colors and poor artist's notebook marginal doodles look put it all to waste. And total agreement. it's not a bad show, it's just not good. It seems to want to be both FX style sitcom and adult swim adult animation and fails at both. I've tried watching on two separate occasions and none of it was funny. Like they're subtle places where it should be broad and broad where it should be subtle. Unremarkable is right. Not even remarkably bad, like certain other shows.
And you're absolutely right about Problem Solverz's visuals. The animation is so stiff and the background colors are so bright and distracting that they can actually hurt one's eyesight -- just ask Mr. Enter. Every other cartoon, no matter how ugly or poorly animated, at least knows not to make that mistake.
I'd like to point out that Quackers has much more fluid animation than PS. Doesn't help with the look, but it's an improvement there. I'd say the ugly visuals weren't so much a mistake. Mistakes are usually by accident. I'd say the ugliness of that show was totally on purpose. And had it been the [as] show it was meant to be, it would have worked in the "let's troll everyone with something purposely awful because it will get a cult following for being bad on purpose" kinda way. But as the older kids line up CN was trying to establish at the time, it just didn't work. The look was just
bad and the audience wasn't there. I tried watching some of it, but the artwork was awful and I couldn't continue. And I usually give things a full episode. meanwhile, Secret Mountain Fort Awesome
owned its ugliness. Unfortunately, no one cared for either. I'm glad UG toned the look down, though. The characters look much more...well, I don't want to say cute (though Pizza Steve is adorable), but more approachable overall.
I really need to give PS another go, maybe with the screen turned off, so I can give a real critical reaction to it. So far, I still think the worst CN original show is My Gym Partner's a Monkey. Not that the series in question isn't ugly in its own right. The look is just so
generically 00's era blocky. Aside from that, I found the jokes painfully obvious in every episode I've seen. I LOVE Tom Kenny and love that he's in
every single American voice show in the last 2 decades, but the show is so bad, you get the feeling he's overused and obvious in the monkey role.
