In the other division it looks like the St. Louis Cardinals again but they aren't having as dominate a season as they've had in recent years.
You're not kidding. They're driving me nuts this year. In many cases, if they had a consistently decent closer, it would be different. And unfortunately, my favorite player is on the Red Sox this year, so I have to root for them, too (sorry to anyone who hates them!).

Have not been watching or listening to ANY baseball lately, and I like this thread because it's easier to understand then the newspaper. Got any new updates for us, Ziff?

Heh heh that's interesting you posted here today, Vic, because I see in my last post here I said "Well here we are at this thread 2 months later." And now today is just one day shy of two months later again!
Also Vickers, I thought about you yesterday when your Giants beat the Eagles! I love it love it love it! All the Eagle fans here (and the players themselves) were starting to get too cocky again. But my Redskins sure looked HIDEOUS last night against the Cowboys. :frown:
But on to baseball. Well the Yankees with the boosts of Bobby Abreu and a few others are really playing well and have a good shot at going to the World Series once again. Boston sure took a tumble in the past 2 months (wasn't that GREAT when the Yankees beat them 5 straight at Fenway?!!).
And, to my surprise, the Detroit Tigers have been struggling the last month. But they're still in a great position to make the playoffs. The Minnesota Twins and Oakland A's are hot but Oakland often chokes in the playoffs.
In the National League the Mets are clearly having the best year. But the Phillies have bene playing great and could get the wild card. And BEAR's Dodgers went on a huge winning streak in August to take over that division. Skye's Cardinals continue to fail to get any real consistency going, but hey, they are still going to win that division at least.
My revised pick (before it was the Tigers and Mets) is now the Yankees and Mets (wouldn't that be fun?! Another subway series!!). And this time I pick the Mets to beat the Yanks (The Yanks prevailed in 2000 in the first subway series).
And Muppets Rule, better luck next year with your Brew Crew. (And the Packers too, for that matter. Maybe your Pack and my Skins will contend for the basement bowl this year!)

It's a little too early still for me to get excited about Football, but I have to abstain from watching my Giants. Without fail, every game I have watched or listened to, even for a second, they lose. If I want them to win, I must learn about it later; hence this game you mention.

That would be bad for me, because my Uncle is a die hard Mets fan, and I don't care enough to tell him how sad that is.
I was so disappointed when we lost to the Diamonbacks in 2001, I thought after 9/11, it would have been the greatest moral booster. Maybe now 5 years later we will.
Thanks, Ziff!

It's going to be a long football season Ziffel. Packer fans are pretty understanding that the team is in a rebuilding mode and are pretty patient. What is wrong with the Redskins? Does the offense really miss Portis that much? I'm sure they'll come around and be in the playoff hunt before all is said and done.

This is the BEST time of year. Football season (college and NFL) is underway and the playoff races are in full swing. Can't beat October baseball. I'd have to agree with a subway series. The Yankees and Mets seem to be the favorites. But you always have to look out for the team coming in hot. That's what makes playoff baseball so great. There's always a surprise.

Boy I'm not sure just what's wrong with the Skins (besides EVERYTHING :stick_out_tongue: ). They were 10-6 last year and won a playoff game. I expected, with Gibbs at the helm, for them to continue to improve. Clinton Portis is a big loss, but they looked so ugly against Dallas that I think he would have been far from enough in that game. Mark Brunell is getting so little protection from the line. And Santana Moss is really their only star receiver. I sure hope they'll be able to turn it around, like you say. But I'm pretty pessimistic now after that poor performance against Dallas, and since they are in a tough division and have an overall killer schedule.
Green Bay did muster some good offense against New Orleans, at least. Favre to Driver is a consistently good pass threat. Guess it's most of the other team, esp. the defense, that needs rebuilding, eh?
And yes, this is a great time of year. I also love watching Monday night (and now Sunday night) football games this time of year when the fall weather brings chillier nights and I can relax in the living room in front of the tv all cozied up under a blanket. And also yes to what you said about looking out for the baseball teams coming in the playoffs hot. The Florida Marlins, for example, finished 2003 extremely hot which enabled them to barely sneak in the wild card slot. From there, they went all the way.
