Chapter 28.
The days passed bleeding into one continuous party, the days and the nights seemlessly merging into one breathing entity. Christmas Day had come and gone, but that didn't mean the spirit of the season faded into the guests' memories, filed away in some secret compartment meant to be brought out of storage with the decorative ornaments next December. Candles were lit as the Count counted and Lisa recited her part out loud in a voice soft enough so only those privately gathered around the menorah could hear her.
The week rolled on, obliviously to almost everybody sheltered in the eerie yet brimming hallways of the Count's castle. The midnight hour was quickly approaching upon that one last night of the year... All inside tinkling glasses filled with either champagne or a thick reddened wine. Yes, it was a good thing noone would be driving, especially since some of the Bears' party were still convinced their drinks would taste like gingerale if only someone remembered to add some sugar. The Electric Mayhem and Diana were in rare form, singing all the right notes in all the right octaves. Uncle Deadly was having the time of his afterlife helming the bat-organ, regailing all with some jubilant spooky serenades. Savion and Celina had the dance floor to themselves, putting on a show of some inventive dances. Then, it happened... The Count ushered all to be silent, Scooter prodding some people to please hush down.
"It's time! Help me count from 10 backvards!" cried out the Transylvanian timekeeper.
Each and every soul cried out in unison, bonded for that one moment in time... "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... Happy New Year!!!"
Of course, this made the Electric Mayhem and Solid Foam go into a tizzy, Animal pounding out a frenzied beat on his drums as the Female Drummer struggled to keep up matching him in enthusiasm and giddyness.
"You'd think they were welcoming the end of the world or something" muttered a man with dark glasses seated in a rocking chair outside on the castle's front porch. The Snowman and White Lion abandoned their posts, inside revelling indoors with the excited crowds of Muppets. The vampire's black cat was the last remaining creature here, perched on the man's lap.
"Yes Fatatatita... It's certainly a wonderful night" mused Ed more to himself than to anybody else.
Fireworks shot out into the ebony landscape spanning above the castle, most all had adjourned to the castle's rooftops to admire the illuminating displays of festiveness. Unbeknownst to them, something else had captured Ed's dimmed line of sight.
"Hmmm... Wonder what that can be..."
"That? Oh, that's just a Wishing Star" replied the elder amphibian stepping out for a quick breath of fresh night air.
"Oh... Is that..."
"Think it is. Then again, it could also be Jim's."
"Why do you suppose it's so bright?"
"Well Ed... It gets that bright when it's trying to show someone something special."
"You think so?"
"Yup. After all, it's shining bright enough for even you to see it right?"
"You've got a point there Kermit."
"Yeah... And I think it might even be trying to lead to another star up there."
"You think..."
"Well, we all have our own stars. But that doesn't mean we can't be connected through and to one big star itself."
"So your star and Jim's star could be mine..."
"Sure, at least a little bit. Just like it has a little bit from everybody who's a part of our family, Muppets and all."
"That's a nice star Kermit."
"Sure is. Oh look, I think that one's..."
The frog drew one of his long fingers upwards, pointing to a second star matching the first's intense light, tinted in pure lightning white strong enough to pierce the darkness veiling this blind bat's eyesight. Ed followed Kermit's instructions, finding his own star. The smaller stayed in orbit above the man's head, the other zoomed across the sky leaving a trail of fire in its wake. Little did they know it, but the star had been spotted by its other owner, his brown eyes gazing out fondly over the quiet sleeping berg left behind in his care during this grand holiday season.
