It occurs to me that an internal arm rod wouldn't necessarily have to be supported by the body. Imagine a hollow arm, with a rod inside it that only attaches to the puppet's hand. The...
Not to derail the thread, but what exactly is the internal structure made of? Also, how is the internal structure attached to the backpack? I assume the weight is carried by the backpack (not on your head, which is what it kind of looks like).

Does anyone know where I could obtain or watch a copy of Philippe Gentry's puppetry documentary "Rites et Jeux" that he made for UNESCO in the sixties? I've found a couple of clips online but nothing more.
I'm thinking of branching into birthday party shows, and I have a couple of questions for anyone who already does them.
How long is your show? and How much do you charge?

I agree with Andrew -- I think if puppeteers only look to other puppeteers for inspiration, there's a danger of just repeating, rather than creating something new. I get inspiration from aboriginal art, the Firesign Theatre, webcomics, Aardman Animations, Douglas Adams, books about museums...
I've had some success doing papier-mache with blank newsprint and acrylic matte medium. A few layers of that make something quite smooth, lightweight, and super hard.

I think there's just as much puppetry skill involved in operating a radio-controlled puppet. Especially if you're using a waldo-like device that's based on a "mitten" -- you can't tell me there's no puppetry skill involved in performing a Doozer.
And even without that kind of input device...
