I remember seeing some "behind the scenes" stuff of Oscars can- or watch the Old School Sesame Street DVD's- There was a metal lever on the top of the can, located on the back were the hinge was. Caroll Spinney would just push the level forward to open the can and to close it he would pull the...
Hey D'Snowth
My girlfriend who is a Occupational Therapist wants to know the following:
A) Are you getting a tingling feeling in your fingers (pins and needles) ? If so what fingers?
B) Have you ever had a shoulder injury or shoulder pain in the past?
C) Have you ever had Carpaltunnel Syndrome...
I had quite a few experiences with arm stiffenin' :-) It usually then follows with arm shakes, then the resting of the puppet on the playboard. I remember one of my first gigs was operating two penguins dancing and singing to some 50's song. Well, needless to say I didn't warm up, I just threw...
Hey Kar Ma,
I agree with the previous posting however, I believe that we shouldn't have to "suffer" for our art. My girlfriend is a Occupational Therapist and is looking into long term effects puppetry has on performers- alot of puppeteers have back problems and knee and hand problems later in...

If you need a head to be ripped off or arm- I recommend using velcro to attach the appendage. Sometimes the damage to the puppet will be severe- I recommend using a puppet double- build...
If you are shooting in Black and white I recommend chocolate syrup watered down some. If you want a a blood squirt get some plastic tubes from a hardware store and pass it through the puppet. Fill it half way with blood then attach a cameraman cleaning bulb at the end- a camera mans cleaning...
I noticed that I was on post 99...this will make 100...go figure!...sorry to take the thunder away from your question miz. :-)...continue conversation...
Oh ya, I once used two old aluminum handles from a set of high end badminton rackets. They were great! Light, and were already painted black. They are a little thicker than most rods but what do you expect for free I guess. They ended up "out living" one puppet already...hey come to think of it...
Arm rods and such
Coat hangers should do the trick- bend one end, so there is a loop to it. Then pass the rod with the loop through the wrist of the puppet, up to the puppets thumb. Sew in place. You may have to bend the rod a bit to acommidate the wrist- depending on the length of hand. The...
When I built the 2 hour puppet, I never saw the mouth pattern being a cat. I think it makes a way better cat. Your puppet building is awesome! If you ever need anything let me know and I hope I can help...or vice versa. :-)
Hey Nick,
I usually start from scratch with a foam base. I would recommend posting your sketch and I (or others) can try to help by constructing a mock then emailing it to you. I really don't have much time, so I can't promise anything; as I have been busy with a Teen Conference. But I would...
