The whole thing's handsewn. In hindsight, probably not necessary to do it ALL that way, but it certainly gave me a better appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into bringing those characters to life.
All I can tell you is what I did. It's a skill that takes a lil patience and getting used to, but what you have to do is take a needle (preferably a nice sharp sewing needle) or pin, and free the fibres from the seam by plucking them up. I come at them from the side rather than on top. And I try...
This may have already been covered in another thread, but I'm wondering if anyone has any tips / formulas for achieving specific skintone colours when dying Antron fleece.
I'm specifically thinking in terms of producing puppets like Miss Piggy, Swedish Chef and Beaker, whose skins are very...
This weekend, I took Kermit out for his first appearance, at MCM Expo in London. I'm looking forward to finding more photos but here's what I've unearthed so far. :)
To be honest I think the MR poser is slightly too small. I'd make use of the MR pattern for the rest of the body, but maybe not the head.
As for making a puppet that can be displayed as a poser too, I'd say the best thing to do would be to work on an armature that is based around a human hand...
Since making Kermit, I noticed I was having a major problem with the eyes. Maybe it was the hot glue adding weight to the ping pong balls, but the weight of the eyes made it difficult to keep them floating symmetrically. I've since fixed the problem by cutting a thin panel of upholstery foam as...
I actually salvaged the plastic for my Kermit's mouth piece from the packaging of an action figure I bought. The arm rods took a little more effort. I headed down to my local hardware store and bought some thin metal rods. They were strong enough to avoid damage, but malleable enough that I...
Wow! He's huge, colourful and very cool to look at! I like him :)
My only suggestion would be to align the pupils of the eyes, so he can focus on people when talking to them.
28 inches sounds about right to me.... I'd say, when in doubt, search for reference pics of the actual puppet against something you can measure. For example, with Elmo, he's always meeting kids, playing with props, etc. If you can get a pic of him next to something familiar, like an apple or...
Fuzzyred, I'm a relative newbie at this myself, but as I'm someone who's been active in artistic stuff for a long time, I can tell you with a certainty that it doesn't come easy to anyone. It's something you practise and get better at.
These things take time, especially making a replica Muppet...
Kermit's finally finished, and he looks fantastic! There's a few small details I'd change if I ever make this again, but I'm really happy with how he's turned out. Already got a few great reactions from family and friends. I'd love to give him legs, but for now, I'm more than happy with how he's...
Maybe if we did a cover of Movin' Right Along, with each of our characters running in from the left, singing their bit, and running out on the right. Any background you want, any character, and we can compile it into one full video! Thoughts?
Yep, his eyelids are simulated with his half round tinted shades. His generic expression is with them resting over his eyes, as if they were actual eyelids, giving him that groovy expression. Then they lift up, widening his eyes and making him look shocked or more alert.
Hmm, if in a bind, you could get a pair of cheap costume hippy shades, round purple ones. Use the plastic lenses from those, cut in half, with some painted plasticard for the frames. Just an idea. :P
Looking at this for reference...
