That's pretty wide open. For any puppet character, it's good to have a sketch/idea of what you want to do. Why do you feel that a one piece construction wouldn't work? I'm not sure about Cookie or Oscar, but Trekkie is built in a 'one piece' style.
If you have your heart set on a...
I think his fingers are 'gimmicked.' Basically a string is connected to his fingertip and then runs through the finger and down the hand to the control rod. On the rod, the puppeteer just has to pull the string. I think someone had a video of a gripping hand that works on this principle, but...
Other puppeteers might do this differently, but depending on the plant, I would make a rod puppet. The rod would be inside the stem of the plant and depending if you push or pull the plant grows taller or shorter. Another option would be to use a spring-type construction kind of like those...
I don't know about video tutorials, but try http://www.nicodemus.org/fursuit/foamhead.php and http://www.angelfire.com/jazz/puppets/make.html Jarrod, from the angelfire site, posts on this board under the name "Keeermit" (I think I got the right number of 'e's in there.) Hope I helped!

Georgina, you may want to check out The Consumer Monster website. http://www.consumermonster.com/ It has a pattern for a puppet who is very similar to Cookie Monster.
Ah. Silly me. I forgot about 'carved' heads. I was thinking of heads constructed out of sheet foam. The technique should work better with 'hollow' heads.
Another method to get the "sunken look" would be to cut the eye holes out of the foam skull, cover it with fleece/fur/whatever, and then glue the eyes from 'inside' the head.
I think the critics on places like Youtube are mostly the Statler and Waldorf of the online community. They're not criticizing your performance to be helpful, but to get some kind of ego stroke from shooting you down.
As an amateur puppeteer, I know that sometimes I break the realism and...
I know you'll probably cover it on Puppet 101, but was that one Reindeer puppet with different accessories or did you make several puppets--one for each character?
Great stuff! I can't wait to see the rest!

I am an avid knitter and crocheter as well as a puppet person. When I saw these patterns, I couldn't believe it! I was looking for a knitted puppet pattern ages ago. These would make great gifts or even great additions to a puppet cast!
It depends on the audience. In live performances it is professional to have the puppeteers visible. It is next to impossible to keep them hidden at all times, not to mention difficult to work with. Look at 'Avenue Q' and the 'Lion King' for instance. They are huge hits and their puppeteers...
