What about making a tree that telescopes so it can pack up easily? You could cover the outside with a woody fabric (brown t-shirt material comes to mind) to hide the telescopic shape to it.
oh man...my stage has a black curtain scrim & I usually just set props out on the playboard to set the scene. Since i use a scrim, I try not to put anything on the curtain if I can help it. So...I guess I'm a bad one to advise on this one.
I dont have any problems with polyfoam, some do..
I was at the muppet exhibit (again) & was noticing that most everything was made with polyfoam, so I now feel good about my sticky guns.
Here's a link to thread wax

glide it through after you've threaded your needle & start sewing. I even do it mid-seam if I remember half-way through.
(I've had the same wax since 98...it lasts awhile to say the least..I'm sure...
a very thin needle will also help...I use a size 10 embroidery needle..for some reason it just helps to make smaller stitches.
Also if you use a size 10 quilter's between, that helps, too, but even with my small woman-hands, its difficult to maneuver it.
if you're familiar with a ladder stitch, its best to do that.
from the outside of the fabric...tuck in both sides just slightly (maybe a centimeter), make small stitches.. and pull it tightly. Wax your thread beforehand to make it stronger...

I was at the muppet exhibit yesterday (again...) & was looking specifically at all of the seams..especially the back of the heads of kermit & bert. The stitching is just about flawless. My guess is that they're doing a ladder stitch & going very slowly. When I do that, my stitches are top-notch...
Buck Beaver had posted not too long ago that cutting polyfoam with any sort of heat device will give off toxic fumes...so...dont?
At JoAnn Fabrics they use an electric Knife. At home I use scissors.
