Also go to http://www.osgoodtextile.com/ they are THE PLACE to go for any kind of fabric, and also have a huge polyfoam selection. You can't tell on their site but this place is a HUGE warehouse. I get big 36'' diameter round foam bolts for carving heads out of. I'm in easy driving distance...
Also try using styrofoam balls, the plain white ones (THEY ARE NOT POROUS) not the semi-white shiny ones which are porous. You can sand them, shape and mold em', thread a screw into them, whatever and they come in several sizes. They also do not dent easily, unless you plan to drive over them...
