Well, the BBC (used to) have higher technical standards than pretty much anyone else :-) There's a story that when they decided to re-run the original "Star Trek" series on its 25 anniversary, they ordered up PAL copies from Paramount. When the tapes arrived, the standards conversion was found...
I've not checked, so this is speculation, but it's not impossible that the eps were done at a lower bitrate than the "main feature", which can cause that kind of problem. In any event, the "Best Of" compilations were edited together years ago, and could well have been put together from...
I don't know about the bit you're referring to, but I can assure you that the UK VHS and DVD releases are not standards conversions! They are taken from PAL masters. VHS is inherently poor quality, it's true, but the difference between PAL and NTSC VHS is still immense :-) The DVD releases...
Oh, Ok :-) Mine dropped slightly at the end of last week, and I was about to post about it yesterday morning, when I noticed it had gone back up again. Then it went down in the evening!
Just for the record, as of this post, my count lists up as 512, so it's at least 12 short right now. I'm...
I posted up here last night to say that I'd noticed my post count had dropped by about a dozen posts since the afternoon. The post I made has now vanished! What the hey?!
Absolutely. The site designer has no idea what system their pages are going to be displayed on, and I do not believe it is their job to try and a) second-guess the user's preferences, or b) foist their preferences on the user. I dislike sites which attempt to fix the size of their displayed...
It's nothing major - I have two copies, one of which includes an extra comment from Statler and Waldorf immediately after the 'Discussion Panel' sketch. The other one just fades to black at that point. The German copy of this particular show also extends the Jug-Band number, presumably because...
The worst one I've seen (on another board ;-) was someone who had an entire Garfield strip in his sig. I wouldn't have minded so much if the image had been, like, the current strip and updated daily, but seeing the same one over and over got a bit dull after a while, 'specially as it was in German!
Thanks! :-P
I run WebWasher to filter out the worst of the advertising and other rubbish. Sadly, it can't tell the difference between an automatic popup and a user-triggered one either :-( It also doesn't filter Flash, and some advertisers are now using that. And trying to legislate this...
Now do you see why I don't like Flash! :-P I agree that there's a place for all these technologies, but the sheer amount of abuse means that the hassle often outweighs the benefits :-(
I'm not aware of Flash being a 'standard' part of any OS installation, and IE certainly doesn't come with...
I've never run into that one. I guess you saw a pretty old version? I have popups disabled to counter their abuse by advertisers, and Flash is unaffected. In fact, Flash managed to install itself on one of my machines without my knowledge, which I found rather concerning! The first I knew...
If they adhered to standards, there wouldn't be any problems. Opera is 100% standards-compliant. Any correctly-written web page will work in it, which is more than I can say for IE.
To be specific, if Opera identified as itself, it got a CSS file back which caused layout problems. If it ID'd as IE, it got the IE CSS file, which worked fine. This could be a simple cockup caused by insufficient testing on MSN's part. Or it could be something more sinister...
Opera's...
