I believe I read somewhere that Frank Oz came up with the Java sketch, or at least made the puppets for it. It's such a great little number, and one of my favorite sketches from Ed Sullivan. Also, probably the only number (other than Mahna Mahna) that was recreated on The Muppet Show better than...
I think the idea behind excluding the arm rod would be because he advertised it as being used to entertain children. If you hand a young child a puppet with an arm rod that could quite easily gouge out one's eye... yeah, that might not be so very good.

It's sort of a mix. It has parts of the version from the first Muppet Show album, but it's changed so it sounds like a variation of the seasons 2-5 theme.
On the original album, they have Fozzie's monologue as well as Kermit introducing the record.
