Wow. Cool discussion. I posted my thoughts here (look under June 22) but I am with Manda and don't see a problem with using CGI tools to enhance puppets.
In the case of Yoda in Episode II, I think it was cost decision - there was so much CG work with Yoda that it was probably hard to justify...
Hi Iokitek,
Welcome to MC! I've written a guide to puppet building resources you'll probably find helpful. The URL is http://www.bear-town.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=11&Itemid=36
I hope that helps!
My question would be what is the advantage of using a stepper motor instead a servo? How heavy would the motor be? If it weighs more than a few ounces it's not that practical to use in puppet that would be held up by a puppeteer for a long time.
I know stepper motors are sometimes used in...
Been coming across a few miscellaneous puppet articles, including some Creature Shop mentions and some stuff about Canadian puppet shows on DVD - posted most it in my blog today (look for it under the June 18th entry).
Getting Get Fuzzy in my email is usually the highlight of my morning. He's hands down doing the best work in comic strips today imho. I know a lot of people "don't get" the strip which I don't understand. It's ruthlessly funny. I know Get Fuzzy fans that range in age from 8 to elderly...
A puppteer in the UK is looking for a puppet builder for a project he is doing. If anyone is seriously interested in this email me privately and I'll get you his email.
Here's the info:
I need a battery boy puppet for some educational shows I will be doing! The logo for the recycling...
Yeah, they just did a huge update because they are afraid of Google's forthcoming GMail (1 gb mailboxes!!). I personally stay away from the "free" email services like Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. but if I was going to go with one I'd consider GMail when it comes out.
I mean has Google's site been...
Tolkien sold off the rights to LOTR and The Hobbit as an afterthought in the late 60s, reportedly to pay off a tax bill. Chances are MGM was involved in the original transaction, or picked up some of the rights from someone who was. This kind of thing happens all the time in Hollywood.
Peter...
Did it make it in to the Puppetry Journal? I haven't seen it (note to self: mail PofA membership form one of these days). I heard that The Lady from Sockholm was mentioned. I think I'm getting a copy sent to me in the mail, but if I don't get one I may take you up on that offer.
I think the status of the project is that MGM and New Line each have 1/2 the rights (a similar problem held up the Spiderman movie for years). They basically have to sort out a revenue/budget sharing agreement. Jackson is not officially attached to it (I'm not sure if it's even considered in...
Thanks Pauly! Glad you liked what little is up so far.
I really don't think antron changes the quality of the puppets, but it does help to hide the seams. For example, Hank in Bear Town (the dark brown bear) has a snout that was done a few years ago with Alpine fleece. The seams are very...
Saw this topic active again and wanted to add that if anyone is looking for blue, green or red shag fur I've found a great source up here. If you're down south you can save and buy in Cdn $ though the customs might be expensive.
That's a very good point about "regular" polar fleece. I think a lot of people get hooked on using antron because they hear that it's what the Muppets have used, no seams, etc. but it's not really necessary - especially when you are just getting started. I don't think I ever worked with until...
Hi everyone,
Been meaning to mention that as I seem to have less and less time lately I haven't been able to post as much puppetry stuff...I am still posting stuff I come across, but now mostly on my own site via my blog and my forum. Everyone is of course welcome to check out both if they...
I just read the article and it seems that they want the Vegas show to be exclusive...still, I'd bet that eventually it will end up in either Toronto or London for a major engagement, but looks like U.S. markets like Chicago and L.A. are definately out of luck.
