How do I make an eye blink mechanism?

One piece of advice: slow down!! It's awesome to see someone so enthusiastic but don't try tackling everything at once. Some of the techniques you're jumping in to take a few years to get down pat. On the subject of blink mechs see my other reply -...

Muppet - style eye blinkers please!

My suggestion is to order Michael Brose's "Figure Making Can Be Fun". It's intended for Vent dummy construction but the techniques in it can be easily adapted to foam puppets. In it he covers off how to make a wide range of mechs. http://www.puppetsandprops.com/DummyBooks.html There's also...

    Going Insane Over Eyes

Whatadoodle, take a look at my Guide to Puppet Building Resources. There should be several links and resources in it that will be helpful. As for locating supplies in the UK, try posting a message on the message board of the British Puppet Guild at http://www.puppetguild.org.uk/messageboard.htm

    SONBEAM PUPPETS RABBIT ON EBAY~feedback

Hi there, welcome to the forum! I'm assuming that you're doing this as a business, since you have multiple auctions on ebay which is a little different than doing this as hobby. My first suggestion - and again this is based on the assumption you're starting a little business - is to...

    Wanting to follow my dream

C'mon, it's a lot more complicated than that Scraps. :p It is a good place to start though.

    Wanting to follow my dream

Try contacting UNIMA Australia, their website appears to be offline but they keep a blog at http://unimaaustralia.typepad.com so you can keep on top of puppetry developments downunder. You should be able to find contact info via the blog.

    Foam Carving Tool

Fish filleting knives work well for carving I'm told.

    Muppet Fur

Most of it can't be bought anymore. My understanding is that they purchase fur in large quantities and then store it for future use. Much of the fur used on the classic characters has probably been out of production for over a decade. You can find close substitutes sometimes that usually cost...

    Enterprise canceled

Yeah, this was an absolutely incredible season. This is just what happened to Angel last season. At least Battlestar Galactica seems to be pretty good. You know there's a lot of talk about how networks have to change their ratings systems to account for things like TiVo that have started...

    Star Wars Puppet Fan Film

We're using CG mostly. I finally decided to go and teach myself 3DS and I'm getting some help from a few professional FX people. I finally have a few new pics to share, this is all more temp stuff - a test of the Jedi costumes. The puppet is an old one that I had lying around and the costume...

    Cutting foam: Bandsaw

Should work, I used to live near an actual foam store and they used these. You should look in to a lubricant that can be used safely on the blade because they tend to dull quickly.

    Gluing Technique Help!

"Rubber cement" and "contact cement" tend to be used interchangably (I am not even sure if there is any difference). First make sure the adhesive you're using is suitable for foam; most glues should have this information on their label or packaging. If you're using the right glue the three...

    John Kennedy: Puppet Mania Review

Just an FYI, John Kennedy is appearing in Florida in March as guest of honour at the Megaplex 4 convention in Florida. All the details are available at http://www.ppmp.info/ They will also be presenting the Funday Pawpet Show live during the convention.

    Sewing Machine of Choice

Just don't waste your money on a plastic machine that is under $500. The ones WalMart sells for $200-300 are particularly bad imho. If you want a new machine buy an industrial one. They are the only ones that last but they are expensive. If you want a really good machine you should just buy...

Creature Shop: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

AICN did a report from an ealy test screening, word is that this movie was done on cheap and Creature effects are kind of a mixed bag: http://puppetvision.blogspot.com/2005/01/aicn-declares-hitchhikers-guide-mostly.html

    Angel puppet from 'smiletime' episode

Yeah, we've discussed it here in the forum before I think. That picture is not accurate by the way. It was an early prototype. The actual plush should be much closer to the puppet seen in the episode.

Seeking Job as a Muppet Voice Artist

The Creature Shop uses a very sophisticated version of this technique as an extension of their Performance Control System. I believe they first used it on either Babe or the live action 101 Dalmatians in the mid-90s. The problem with this type of system is that it turns puppets in to...

Seeking Job as a Muppet Voice Artist

On the subject of lip-sync vs. live audio, live audio is definately the way to go. In some situations in puppet theatre it's necessary to lip sync to voice tracks, but you loose a lot of sponteniaty. For film or video I would definately not pre-record voices. It's a very bad idea. If you...

Lisa Henson on the JHC & Non-Muppet Projects

Thought this might be interesting for some of you...Lisa Henson put out a statement via Neil Gaiman's blog that sort of addresses the whole issue of Henson doing non Muppet projects. It's interesting in a myth vs. reality sort of way. I have an excerpt and links to the full text at...
