I have not worked extensively with dyes, but I did professional black light theatre for almost five years and in my experience store-bought fluorescent fabrics and paints are vastly superior to dye. Aljo would be worth at least experimenting with though.
I don't consider myself a cartoonist by any stretch of the imagination, but I've studied animation and comics quite a bit over the years. I think both are very similar to puppetry and puppeteers can learn a lot from them. I'm actually going to a bunch of intensive comics seminars in a few weeks...
I agree that the Muppets need a regular vehicle to promote themselves in, but Crank Yankers is not anywhere near what Jim and Jane Henson did with Sam and Friends. Crank Yankers has it's moments but is essentially a one-joke show (prank calls acted out by puppets). If you watch the early Muppet...

They maintain a list of NYC-area Puppet Happenings. There's lots of puppetry stuff in New York, just take sometime and meet puppeteers, network and find out when workshops/classes are happening.
No, it's a different format. I think the actual DVCAM tape is wider than MiniDV. I think that the wider surface area is one of the reasons it's a superior format (more space to store data in).
MiniDV is pretty good, but after shooting on it for a few years I'm switching to DVCAM because I find the quality of the tapes is better. It's more expensive, but there are fewer dropped frames and superior image quality.
I can't tell you the mics used, but the foam was for reducing pops. The headbands supposedly were made by the Muppet workshop. They're likely not that different from the current generation of headband-mounted lav mics, just probably a little bigger and more rugged.
Just on the subject of religion, although I don't think there's a specific policy here, I think debates/discussion about religion are outside the scope of the puppetry forum and not likely to head anywhere productive.
Christian puppetry discussions are great, but what with this being...

First of all, welcome to the forum.
Second of all, what I'm about to say may come off as harsh - and it's meant to - but it's largely the truth and will do you a lot of good to hear now before you get started and invest a lot of time and possibly money.
Not to dismiss your idea out of...
LOL, I was just thinking "Animal Jam". There's a lot of post-1990 Henson stuff that falls in to this category come to think of it.
Myself, I worked on a pilot for a series that I probably shouldn't name that was one of these. Amazing cast, great looking puppets and a great set but the writing...
Ask and ye shall receive...I just posted a bunch of pics from our last shoot online - http://angrypuppets.blogspot.com/2005/03/another-day-another-shoot.html
I hope to have new puppet pics up by the end of the week.
