I was thinking what with most people recording videos of their puppets these days there must be a lot of funny gag/outtake reels of mistakes that don't make "the final cut" so why not a thread where everyone can share them?
Here's some bloopers from my 2004 Bear Town web series.
Does...
The "original" fleece was discontinued several years ago because the material used to make it was discontinued. Georgia Stage worked with the textile mill to develop the "new fleece" which it has been selling for a few years now.
The fleece has always been sold in several different weights and...
Yes, Grant Harding came up with a very nice, similar design for moving hands on a rod puppet a couple years ago. There is a video here and I think there are even a few old threads devoted to it in the archives somewhere here in the forum.
I haven't used this particular method (the tutorial was written by Bard Johansen), but would assume that the key is the "springiness" (is that a word?) of the plastic tubing. This is pretty basic and low-tech; the best way to do movable hands is to use springs and proper cables but that involves...
That's a tough question because there are few puppetry schools and no uniform job requirements. Whether you are working in theatre or film or TV matters as well.
I think the most important thing is a sense of play. A neat little exercise I have seen at puppetry auditions is to have a collection...
Hi everyone,
There's a new tutorial up on PuppetBuilding.com that explains how to build a simple animatronic or cable controlled hand using everyday items. The tutorial was originally written by Bard Lund Johansen and includes a lot of photos and a couple videos. If anybody has ever wanted to...
This is very true, but I would advise against using spandex. I used to use spandex to line puppets years ago and the problem I ran in to was that the spandex stretches over time. It's especially bad if the puppet's head is movable and the lining attaches to the head - over time the neck will...
An easy way to make the mechanism for a puppet like Pepe is to buy a fish hook remover (you can find these in the fishing section at Wal-Mart usually). It works like a trigger and the part that opens and closes could be used for his mouth.
Also, if you search for "rod puppet" or "Pepe" here in...
I don't know about anybody else, but I really enjoy watching these even if they are "rambly". BTW, I mentioned this in the comments under the video, but I highly recommend the Canon camera you were mentioning. I use it at work and the video it records is awfully pretty.
You should be able to log in with your user name and password...click the blue tab at the top of any page on the site for the login panel. It's a little awkward logging in at the moment, it's one of the things I'm still working on.
If you've forgotten your username or password just email me...
Thanks guys. I think the Directory still needs to prettied up a bit. I am going to put together a tutorial on how to format entries so they look as attractive as possible since everyone maintains their own.
Hi all,
I've just finished an pretty major update to PuppetBuilding.com, giving it a new look and improving a number of things on the backend to help it run smoother. Among the changes is a new Video Tutorial section where I'm putting various puppet building tutorials from YouTube and...
This is pretty cool...Gary Friedman has recently put up some videos on YouTube from the course in Film & Video Puppetry that Jim Henson taught the Institute International de la Marionnette in France in 1987 (Gary was one of the students there).
I've posted a quick rundown of the videos on...
When I lived in Mexico, our place had a small maid's apartment attached to it (this is pretty common in a lot of upper/middle class Mexican homes) that I used as a studio and it was great. Now back in Canada I have an office I work out of, but it's not really big enough to accommodate puppet...
...and it seems to be quickly becoming a puppetry mecca too. Lots of I.T. work for your hubby too.
I think we need to start a "Bring Stacey to Canada" group on Facebook. :p
That's awesome, I didn't know they have those. Thanks Bezalel. I think a compressor is a good investment too, but it's nice to know these cans are available for one-off jobs (I don't have a compressor and usually have to beg/borrow access to other people's).
