That's true. Another possibility I just thought of is that her mother disapproves of something entirely different, and Janice just uses the naked on a beach thing as a way of saying "Stop controlling me!"

Probably Sesame Street or Fraggle Rock. I was also fairly young when I first saw the earlier Muppet movies. It's hard to say, because I don't remember not knowing anything about Muppets.
