The only thing I'm iffy about is the placement of Oscar's can. But if I see in real life, I'll make better judgement on it. (Hopefully, I'll be able to get my picture in it. They're apparently iffy on pictures cause of the set rebuild, but let this slide somehow).
You can glimpse a few of the changes to the set in some of these photos:

I'm pretty sure that was intended as a one-time special, not a series.
I wouldn't say variety shows are dead. SNL is basically one, though leaning more toward sketch comedy. Musicals have been quite popular lately, so having a new musical Muppet show with sketches doesn't seem like it'd fail...
My theory: certain Muppeteers who don't have main characters but are available frequently enough (Tyler, Stephanie, Peter). Thus, they have the performers, just not legit characters for them.
How is using a green screen any different than using like a flat/painted backdrop? Is it because the latter is actually there? It's all fake anyway; everyone knows, so I don't see what the issue is.
Not sure what you mean, but from what I've seen, only Hooper's is changed on that part of the block. The sign is changed too (though it's not like the old-school one).
