One of my favorite things about The Muppet Movie is how Sweetums spends the whole time chasing after them, in the movie that the Muppets are watching in The Muppet Movie... and then pops out of the screen at the end of the movie they were watching that he was in.
I feel like there are so many possibilities with Walter. I imagine there's no role at the Muppet Theater he wouldn't be willing to feel. If he were to join the cast of a new show, one of the "conceits" (perhaps) could be that Walter does something new every week - backstage or onstage.
Reynolds actually did a really good job with what he had. He's not the absolute ideal guy for the role (that would, of course, be Nathan Fillion) but he was the high point of the movie. Really gave it his all, even if the script ensured that his all couldn't ever be too much.

Sounds like Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, which some people have affection for but I've never really loved it. Big Trouble in Little China's great, though!
