Hey guys,
I'm stuck at college here in Seattle and I'm pulling together a puppet troupe. Tomorrow we're having our second meeting and I'm incredibly excited. :excited:
Eventually I plan to do some filming with the puppets but in the mean time I thought Seattle would be the perfect...
That's a good idea, but for the smoothtest results I've found that cutting the foam into complete triangles and then reassembling them works the best for me. Just cutting the darts out of the foam tends to leave little ridges and bumps that define where the tip of the removed dart and the...
I put together a simple diagram from a perspective of the base for you:

Hope that helps!
I found that if you do cut the wedge edges at angles and then vary the direction of the angles (facing in, facing out, etc.) the head will be very smoothly rounded.
I've got some big chunks of foam from an apholstry (may the spelling gods have mercy) shop before. They gave me a pretty fair price, seeing as I'm still working from the same block I got 3 years ago.
Yeah! That's how I made my first live-hands puppet. I had a dream that I somehow came to work Ernie on SS and in my dream I analyzed the puppet; When I woke up, I was ready to make a puppet. That's one of the only good dreams I've had that didn't make me sad when it was all over... except I...
Is there a place online to download that film?
Also, I'm looking into buying a dv camera. What kind did you use, and would you recomend buying that model? Thanks!
Yeah, Buck, that's kinda what I had in mind. I do want the hair to be kinda boofy though, and in the picture it looks a little closer to the head than what I had in mind. I'm going to look around at some doll shops though -- the last shop I went to had wigs that were slightly too small, but...
Thanks for all the feedback! I'm looking for straight synthetic gray hair that I can put up in a bun, or at least fake a bun by attaching some hair to half of a styrofoam ball and sticking it on the wig in the back of the head. This needs to be secure and light weight... and simple would...
Hey, I'm working on an elderly female puppet and I need to know how Miss Piggy's hair (Or any Muppet with synthetic human hair) is attached. Her head seems too free and flexible for it to be a wig, 'cuz I've found that they're very heavy.
I'm quite under-educated when it comes to using...
When the pic came up my head just jerked toward the monitor and I went "wow". That's some good stuff there. Is it dyed foam? Did you glue it together or sew it?
If you want it to be "whispy and stand out", I think the fur only appears that way because it's only a small quantity on the trolls. That's the problem I ran into when I upgraded Scary Larry and made him bigger -- his eyebrows "shrank".
Hey, keep working toward your dream! Your dream might even improve. I know I'm only 18 right now and don't have to worry much about a family yet, but for the past five years I had to work at a gravestone production company and I thought I would NEVER get a break. Last year I had the fortune...
Scary Larry is currently at stage 3.0, but *rumor has it* that I'm making a "stunt double" for him which is turning out better than the original... so 3.0 might become 4.0's stunt double.
Unfortunately, I don't have any early drawings of Larry. He was created spontaniously by a 6th grade me...
I thought it would be a fun idea to post pics of everyone's first attempt at making puppets. For those who've been building a while it might serve as encouragement to those who have not. If not at least it can conjure a few good laughs.
Here's the first ever Scary Larry...
I sent in a form to copyright my puppets last year (I still haven't got it back yet -- screwy government). I got the visual arts form for that, but if you want your film clips copyrighted then you'll want a PA form located here:

Good luck!
I didn't even know Kevin -- heck, I didn't know MC existed when that game came out! Anyway, Scary Larry's in there on the first gallery page somewhere -- he looks like he turned into a werewolf. I'll have to check that game out again sometime and look for everyone else's stuff. Congrats, Kev!
