Yeah, but the movie is going to lose more and more theaters as the weekends go on, and believe it or not, but new movies do come out during January, which will start to eliminate these one million dollar weekends pretty quickly. Expect maybe one more.
Probably a fluke. The movie was dropped out of over 300 theaters this weekend.
To be fair, that was the early 90's, and movies stayed in theaters much longer than they do today. Nowadays it's all very frontloaded and the idea of "legs" has been lessened.
It's certainly possible but I...
I would think that its theater count will drop to three digits on Friday, but I could be wrong. One thing I know for sure is that the film has finished making big money. I see it topping now at 86 to 87 million. It'll get pulled fully just prior to its DVD/Blu-Ray release in March.
The 85 million refers to international gross, domestic (American numbers) is 78. Think of foreign grosses as extra sauce, while the domestic gross is the real meat that the studios want to flaunt in the end. The international gross of a movie has to be staggeringly higher than the domestic for...
Mission: Impossible probably the only safe bet on making its budget back, yeah. (oh and Chipmunks, but its laggard performance compared to its prequels makes it a non-issue)
The second the 26th hit, Sony pulled Arthur. I guess we won't hear about it ever again until the DVD (quietly) hits shelves in November 2012.
The film is still in 1500+ theaters, I have to imagine it will drop to three digits in January, but that's still impressive. Probably will truly drop off...
Yes, it's less, but in the end it will be for only one movie: The Muppet Movie, which sold probably twice as many. It's the only one of the theatrically released crop that could be considered "blockbuster" status.
The box office has rejuvenated, but basically to the point where it should have...
Soar over 100 million in its overall gross is probably correct? A full 100 million overseas? Ehhh... I'm not sure on that.
I am fully confident that it will be a hit on DVD.
Also Letters to Santa better than the new movie?! I... we'll have to agree to disagree :D
To be fair, those increases for every other movie was extremely pathetic. It was a rough Christmas for pretty much every release.
But yeah, the next week should earn it another 3 million to 78, and it's off to limp its way slowly to 80.
Internationally is a wild card, I won't even begin to guess it. It could explode or just do modestly.
Disney will probably let the film domestically run until it limps its way to 80 million, just so they can point to that number.
4-5 million is a little high. Expect it to stay flat around 3 million. With 73 million by Thursday, the film will reach 76-77 million over the weekend, and probably reach 80 by NYD. After that... it's a slow crawl to wherever it winds up. Most likely 82 million, which probably falls into...
So Muppets actually did very well Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday is the real test. I'm not sure how much the theater count is going to drop... but it could be scathing. Stay tuned..
It's best shot was a holiday release and let's face it: it could have been worse. Under Disney's original schedule, the film wouldn't be out until tomorrow! And then crushed by Chipmunks for sure.
Yes. Very much so. These two weeks are pretty much going to put the film on sustained life support. But it'll die a quick death afterward, probably in the early 80's.
Chipmunks underperforming is a terrific thing. It proves to Disney that a box office slump did the film in, and not lack of...
Yeah, ironically Alvin will make more money than Muppets even though its opening weekend is a tad tiny. Even if there is easy proof that the box office is seriously tanking, Christmas break weekdays can't be beat. The only decent news is that this won't reach 200 million... a sign of slight...
Usually the last week of July is the last chance for a summer family film. The Simpsons Movie broke the bank with that weekend, which is probably the best example.
