The new What Made You Smile Today thread

At the time I met her, she was touring plugging her new book. It was about a girl who didn’t get invited to a birthday party because of her color. She wrote it in a clever way, it wasn’t overwrought or preachy. One thing I also loved about Susan, in the early years there were many variations of...

The new What Made You Smile Today thread

Getting back to “Someday Little Children”, I vaguely remembered the song when I was little. When I found the album, the main songs I was looking forward to hearing were “Has Anybody Seen My Dog?” and “Mad!” (God bless you, Jerry). So “Someday Little Children” came as a big surprise. I was 31...

Repurposing It ‘s a Wonderful Life with a political bent sounds like risky business. Frank Capra’s estate, or whoever owns the movie rights now, would probably not be too keen on that.

    What made you think today?

There is an episode of Dinosaurs called “A New Leaf”. Robbie discovers the joys of a certain “happy plant”. This episode was custom made for me.

    What made you think today?

For about ten years, band mates, college roommates, and a number of library books gave me a good education of the mysterious cannabis plant. It’s been about 25 years since my last puff. There’s so much new stuff now I wouldn’t know where to begin.

    What made you think today?

There are many nicknames so for marijuana. Mary Jane because of its spelling. You wouldn’t walk up to a dealer and say “ Yes want to buy an ounce of marijuana, please”. He might think you’re a narc and plug you. Weed, pot, grass, boot, hash, tea. Or if you wanted something specific. Like...

The new What Made You Smile Today thread

Just about 50 years ago, Sesame Street released its second cast album of songs from the show. The first one, which included “Rubber Duckie”/“Bein’ Green”, actually made the pop charts and won a Grammy. So my folks bought that, and the second one for me. I wasn’t even three yet, but I played...

    What made you think today?

That is true. My parents and grandparents were definitely morning people. Maybe someday that will be me too, who knows. Up to the age of ten, I was always in bed at 9 pm and woke up to see the sun rise. And I slept sound the whole way through. Then in my teens my body clock shifted and it’s been...

Neither can I. Our body clocks run a little differently. Nothing wrong with that.

We didn’t dissect frogs, but worms. I can still smell the formaldehyde. You had to cut its skin open, pin it back, and find it’s digestive track and all that fun stuff. The only thing I remember from Chemistry, when mixing compounds, always add acid to water. Never water to acid. Our big...

I sucked at math too. I got by in Geometry, but Algebra killed me. On the flip side, I could ace anything verbal. Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, I nailed it. Science, did good in Biology and Physics, but Chemistry, not so much. Thankfully, since 1985, I never had to solve for X.

Don’t know much about Chemistry. Don’t know much of Trigonometry. Don’t know much about Algebra. Don’t know what a slide rule is for. But I do know one and one is two. And I know that if you love me too What a wonderful world this would be.

That’s amazing they got to film that. Dolphins have rescued people shipwrecked at sea. They are magnificent creatures. The closest I ever got to one was putting my hand in a tank and touching his back as he swam by. What I wouldn’t give to swim with them.

Back in my day, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, here were your school options; Public school. Catholic school. Boarding school, but only if your parents had megabucks. Charter schools and homeschooling didn’t exist yet. Sadly, if you had any learning disorder, you just fell behind. It wasn’t...

I don’t blindly support Trump like Mario did. I don’t blindly hate Trump like Snowthy does. I can do without his tweet storm. If there is one thing he did for the good of this country, was deregulating so many industries, so businesses CAN do business here. Instead of outsourcing to China...

My high school years were 1982-86, and never read Gatsby. Like I said, I OD’d on Shakespeare, but I also remember A Separate Peace, Death of a Salesman, Tartuffe, Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales. with Shakespeare, I hated MacBeth. But Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and The Merchant of Venice...

Quite often in the mess hall, if you look closely, they serve a lot of potato chips. That gives Igor more time to bartend at the officer’s club.

I cook with onions constantly, and the idea is to cut them small. I use red onions only on salads, but I go through yellow onions like they’re going out of style. Vidalias are my favorite.
