Years ago, a coworker of mine at Barnes & Noble was rushed to the hospital with burns in his mouth. He'd grabbed a Pop-tart right out of the toaster and bit into it. Turned out he was okay, healed fast... The next day when he returned to work, some buddies had copied, enlarged, and printed a big banner from the Pop-tart box: CAUTION: POP TARTS WILL BE HOT!
I've bitten into a LOT of food that's deceivingly hot in my day. Stuff I made myself, anyway... I totally torched the roof of my mouth on a bean burrito (made entirely by myself, not the frozen kind) several weeks ago. The thing is, they can write "caution: food is hot" all they want, but you can never expect how hot something actually is when you touch it to one of the most sensitive parts of the body, the inside of your mouth. Somehow, paste like things tend to retain a crapload of heat that can't be felt by the rest of the product. Sometimes the outer casing of something, while warm, isn't half as hot as the filling... even with something as simple as a baked potato.
A warning to say something is hot will do no good. A) we
know it's going to be hot and B) we just don't know
how hot the product's going to be. If they had a warning that said, "no matter how long you cool this thing down, it's going to be indescribably flaming freaking lava hot when you least expect it to be" it might work.
But then again, you wind up with a Hot Pocket that's hot enough to melt metal on one end, and all the sudden you find a still frozen piece of something on the other side.
I'd get banned if I said what I was thinking about people who have nut allergies and are stupid enough to eat something without checking if it has nuts first...
No one who's allergic to peanuts is going to down an entire container of peanut butter, or even touch anything that has the words "peanut" on it. It's those deceiving things that randomly shares facilities with peanuts that somehow shouldn't, but due for cost saving purposes. THAT'S what the labels are for. For warning people with allergies that foods that shouldn't contain peanuts or milk somehow have peanuts and milk
near them.
