i think a lot of this thread was moved over to the absurd Bert & Ernie petition page. My thoughts on the subject are that their relationship should remain ambigous and in time gay people could be represented in the human cast without making a big deal about it just as Sesame successfully portrayed an interracial couple without delving into policial correctness or bigotry. However, gay people and gay parents have been shown on Sesame in the form of many entertainers who have taken part in the program. I never think a big deal needs to be made about the inclusion, but I am quite offended by the exclusion.

Chaz Bono is already getting grief for taking part in the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars due to being transgendered. It is a program heavily watched by families, but I don't see why Chaz should spark a discussion about anything unless it stems from the parent. I don't believe the show is going to be used as a soap box and besides, Chaz looks much more manly than me. I doubt many youngsters would question that anyway.

I have featured images below of entertainers who have managed to be officially out and open in their own distinct way without making that big a deal of it. I hope that trend continues. (Psst, by the way, Kermit isn't one of those entertainers, of course. But I do admire his knack for making friends from all walks of life.) None of these entertainers' lives are a secret. We're just in a new climate that doesn't much care for witch hunts anymore. Well, except for some key politicians.

Here's the thing. I've never heard anyone complain about 4Kids employing a Transgender voice actor. They did. I forget the name, Maddie something, but she did the voice of characters like Wally Tuskett on Ultimate Muscle and Meowth back when they did Pokemon. No one made a deal about it, no one said anything about it, no one knew or cared. Could you imagine the heat they would've taken saying that a kid's show employs one?

The Chaz Bono thing is bunk. I mean, DWTS wants to have controversial guest stars ANYWAY. That's how they get their ratings. Didn't they have Bush era corrupt politician Tom DeLay as one of the contestants once? And don't get me started on Media Ho Kate Pluseight, who wanted even MORE money. No one complained then. (notice the restraint I had not referencing Palin's daughter?) It's reality TV... it's sleaze no matter what shape or form it's in. People pretty much watch to see people they hate fail.

I hope this isn't a weird question, if it is I apologize. What do you think about gossip columnist types who deliberately try to "out" people? I personally think it's a little cruel. I mean if someone is going to come out, it should be because he or she wants to, not as some sort of tabloid gimic to sell papers. But there are others who think these tabloid tactics are OK because people in the closet aren't being true to themselves (or their spouses if any).

It's not just "outing" people. Tabloids try to dig up anything that can sell papers. It still does impact carreers in some ways. Matt Bomer lost out to playing Superman twice and i believe that's in part due to his being out. There were also totally unsubstantiated rumors about Routh that could have played a factor in his losing a role in the reboot and could also have impacted the box office. I guess people feel the same about a gay Superman as they do a black Spider-man right now. It shouldn't matter, but it still does.

(fan created photo of Bomer)

I only listed the stars in my post who have confirmed their orientation in one way or another. I was particularly careful with Cat Cora, but not only has this been posted on her wiki page, it's also supported in several other areas too.

However, I do believe in outing gay people who actively campaign to deny gay rights. That is a legitimate story. The rest is clearly not.

Why would anyone want a character that runs around in tight tights with impeccably groomed hair to not be gay?

Maybe they need to randomly throw an Aunt character in the movie, like they did with the 1960's Batman show... and again... the whole 1960's show was the source of gay stereotype jokes as it is.

Oh yeah definitely. I wasn't comparing it to your post. I was just curious about the issue.

So you mean like the politicans who really fight hard for a bill, things like that? Yeah I could see where that would be an appropriate time for that; politicans are often exposed for hypocrisy when it comes to issues they campaign about.

There's a debate about the seemingly fey husband of a political candidate right now who facilitates the "de-gayification" of irrational, self-loathing folk. Yeah, if it is ever legitimate that he gets exposed it'll go up on my facebook status and I'll throw a party! If it's not, then that's just one of life's funny, unlikely and unfortunate things.

You watched that John Stewart too, didn't ya? I swear that a good percentile of the gay loathing rights denying public figures are a bathroom stall away from exposure.

As far as Tabloids and celebrities go... Does anyone even really bother taking stock in any of that? I mean, I once had the morbid curiosity to check out a "bad beach bodies" issue... on the cover there was a heavy set female celeb who wasn't even named until you were forced to read the article... even then I've never heard of her... The cover was all "Look at how disgusting this is." and then the article said "so and so is a proud BBW! You GO GIRL!" or something to that extent. That shouldn't be indicative of actual news.

Based on my research, you'd be surprised how many people live for this stuff and really do take it seriously. To the point where they think anyone who doesn't believe tabloids is being naive! Especially on the Internet, they're in this sick little community of "a friend of a friend told me" and they believe it all unquestioningly, with no thought to actual research or sourcing. It's quite fascinating and disturbing at the same time, lol.

Fighting libel costs money and it helps promote the culprit in the process so most folk don't bother confronting most of the falsehoods. That's the only reason tabloids exist.
