You bring up pretty strong examples, I feel. Over the hedge and Kung Fu Panda were great movies because they weren't Dreamworks's usual cloning of Pixar movies. In fact, those 2 movies are the reason why Dreamworks' films have been solid ever since. They did their OWN thing and moved away from the Shrekified films they were going down the path of. Kung Fu Panda was almost a serious Kung Fu movie with a comedic accent. And even the most stringent anti-Dreamworks indie newspaper movie reviewers had kind things to say about Over the hedge. Where as Sharktale was a jaded attempt to make an urban Finding Nemo. All it proved was that mafia film references lost their humor and pretty people have generic voices in animation form. And while it's not a Dreamworks film, I'd rather watch bothced eye surgery than Happily Ne'er after... and ESPECIALLY the sequel. If you actually go back and read these posts on this thread, it's easy to see I"m a huge fan of Toy Story and Pixar, not to mention I've enjoyed other 3D animated movies such as Over the Hedge, Kung Fu Panda, heck I even admitted that I'm willing to give Tangled a shot. Course their have been really BAD CGI animated movies like Sharktale and Happily N'ver after.
Home on the Range was BRUTAL! It was original... I give it that. but it was just... ugh! I liked how the villain was evil because no one liked his yodeling. Other than that... you can see why they pledged to stop making them. Of course, their first CGI solo gig, Dinosaur was the dullest thing I've ever seen.Course that's not to say there's never been bad 2D animated movies, of course their has been, a thousand times yes their has been. Disney's Home on the Range is among one of the worst and that's coming from a pretty big Disney fan.
What everyone seems to forget is that in the early and mid-90's we were blanketed with TERRIBLE 2-D animated movies. I'm not talking quality films like Land Before Time 1, the first 2 Fieval movies, and All Dogs go to Heaven... I'm talking swill like Thumbellina (which I only saw for the Animaniacs short), Sinbad... stuff like that. Everyone has ALWAYS tried to copy Disney. The difference is, when they had CGI films, most of them were initially successful. I mean, garbage like Space Chimps, Fly Me to The Moon, and ANYTHING made by Sony just clutters up the market and hurts the reputation of CGI films, especially good ones.
