I think Marvel will play into their Video assets. Marvel movies on Disney XD or Disney Channel first and cartoons on many of their networks in a deeper capacity. Perhaps a good way to use the synergy to get content out there otherwise too difficult to produce/sell. That is the logical integration point.

Disney is looking to snag some evergreen properties worthy of the iconic stature of Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog and the Lion King. They have been focused far too long on creating compartmentalized tween properties with popular but limited shelf life. There's been little balance. I don't think acquisition is the motive here. Disney wants the wide options that ownership creates - video games, apparel, print, collectibles and park presence. Attendance has been down, Spidey will get more of today's public than Goofy. I expect that they will have a park presence and probably some sort of stunt show down the line.

Right now, I'm for it. I don't see what Marvel gets. Maybe having a monolith providing the financing is worth this. It was worth it to Jim Henson...to a point.

Attendance is down cuz no one can afford it. 100 bucks a ticket? people can barely afford 10 bucks for a movie ticket now.

But I agree... what does Marvel get out of this? Other than the 4 million. I mean, the comic book industry is pretty strong now... at least the mainstream ones. People are buying all those movies, toys and T-shirts and everything. Marvel just announced a ridiculous number of projects, and they have several still going.

I dunno... Maybe Disney just bought it because comics are popular at the moment, and they wanted to ride the wave until the inevitable crash. Plus, they don't have to rely on anything new. I mean, Pixar handles the cartoons now, all they have to do is crank out the same junk they've been cranking out for the past couple years.

I guess this enables the muppets to do some super hero spoofs.

Now we're going to see Disney's Hannah Montana and Jonas brothers do the a Young Avengers tv series...

... ::thinks to himself:: i usually jinx myself with non-sense like this... I TAKE IT BACK! I TAKE IT BACK!

This Can't be Good...

Marvel was pretty much free of bullcrap because it was their own indie operation. In fact, they have total creative control over their titles. The only way this is will make me happy is if they let Marvel Ent. run independently A la Pixar and Disney provides money and advertising. But if Disney handles their new found property badly (For Example; Marvel characters make Awkward/Unnessesary cameos on one of Disney Channel's so called "sitcoms"), it'll be like when Disney bought the Muppets back in 2004 all over again: Fans waiting outside, with pitchforks and torches held high, and protest signs like "bring back Marvel!'' also held up high. I can see that happening right now...

I really don't want to go here... but....

(and this pains me to talk about the Muppets popularity in this way)

Unlike the Muppets or Saban's back catalog, Marvel would be big enough for people to notice something was missing if Disney didn't do anything. Especially now, when people love comics (well... half of them do... the rest are poseurs that only like it because it's cool, and just see the movies). Any drop in Spider-Man, X-men, or Iron Man products and/or appearances would make a huge dent. In fact, the news alone must've sent shockwaves out there that are still rippling.

I'm sure Disney would let Marvel run themselves, and I'm sure it's just an acquisition thing... they would be absolutely, insanely, mindlessly stupid to do otherwise. Something I'd expect out of Sony, but not Disney. Look at Pixar. They let Pixar not only run themselves, but Disney's 2-D animation studio.

The main thing I'm concerned with is Boom's Muppet and Pixar comic line. Anyone else think that's a sign of worry?

I saw that this made the front page of the New York Times yesterday and there was a quote from Marvel creator Stan Lee calling the merger a "dream come true." So... I think that's a good sign.
