You're right William; while there ARE notable similarities between the characters (ball caps, denim vests, both simpletons from the country, and the names "Ernest T." and "Ernest P."), it's really more of a coincidence than anything (like the whole Jeanette from The Chipmunks and Irma from TMNT thing).

Too bad Jim Varney felt peigon-held in the role though, if ya know what I mean.
Well, it's kind of like how Michael Richards will only be remember as Kramer, or how Gary Burghoff will forever be Radar, Jim Varney will forever be Ernest.

I just feel bad that--as a person with a genius-level IQ--he's stuck with a role he grew to detest (even though we all enjoyed it).
