Yes, the peony is native to Asia, and to parts of Europe and North America as well, so it's only natural that the peony should appear in Asian artwork. In fact, my mother and I keep a large stash of fabric around for quilting, and in a lot of the Asian-style prints we have, the peony is a common motif.
